Because, well, they wouldn't really fit into the box then

Why not? Surely one extra board thickness layer wouldn't make *that* much difference...?!

(I don't own the game myself - we were discussing a friend's copy. This was driving us crazy!)

Hmm, game boards that don't fold EXACTLY in half... sounds like a geeklist in the making!!

These ones don't even fold REMOTELY in half!

It's not about the thickness, but the area. Folded like this, the board (seen from above) has exactly the size of the game box. Folded any other way, it wouldn't.

Two questions then arise from this:

1) Why don't all the boards have the fold in the same place, rather than them all having it at different positions along the board's length.

2) Why not just make the box smaller?

There's rational answers to both those questions, even though I don't care at all whether it's folded like this or any other way

They all do have it in the same place. Unless you turn some of them by 180° or flip them over, that is.

Boxes seem to have standard sizes that are much cheaper to buy, rather than produce exactly the size of box you want that perfectly holds your game. Just look at FFG - pretty much every game of theirs is in exactly the same size of box. So I guess it's just a matter of "hey, this box fits our game, and it's reasonably priced, but look just how much the board wiggles in there"...

Just fold them in half by yourself.

It wasn't a complaint. Just something that was keeping me awake at nights.

You'd never get this sort of thing in an FFG game.
