Hi, Ive endlessly searched through BBG looking for solo games (or solo variant games) other than WW1 or 2 games. For some reason solo games seem to usually focus on these areas. There clearly seems to be a lack of solo games particularly fantasy or sci fi based games. The best Ive come up with so far are Arkham Horror, Dungeon Bash and Lord of the Rings. My ultimate game would be one in which characters really develop so that a single player could find a game taking weeks or even months. Most suited to this concept so far is Dungeon Bash but since this now involves me having to relearn D & D rules, its going to take me ages before I can even start playing! So for a quicker fix, has anyone got any suggestions.
Ps my ultimate game would be a solo variant of something like the computer game UFO AFTERMATH, whereby you create teams of marines that that explore the planet, trying to defeat an alien threat. Please dont remind my of spacehulk since this is no longer in print.
Anyone out there got any suggestions?

Try using advanced search w/ minimum number of players equal to one. (Maximum number of players should be left blank.)

This will give you long list of games that can be played solitaire. You can also use the categories to limit your search.

First, let me direct your attention to the Dwarfstar game line, a set of early eighties games which are now available for free download! The series includes two solo games: Barbarian Prince and Star Smuggler. http://dwarfstar.brainiac.com

Although they don't involve the character development you speak of, Intruder and Last Frontier: The Vesuvius Incident are two fine solo sci-fi games inspired by the Alien movie franchise.

Finally, SPI released a few solo games in the Ares magazine game line. Here is a Geeklist that will get you to the games:

I have just played Island Of D four times in the last two days. It is a fantasy solo adventure game. It is fun and plays quickly. It's free and downloadable so you could be playing it in an hour.

If you can find these you could try Intruder and Chainsaw Warrior. Intruder is basically a rip-off of Alien, but I used to have lots of fun playing it. Chainsaw Warrior was like playing the old Doom video game before there was any such thing.

I put together a geeklist of all the solitaire games I could find on the geek. http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist.php3?action=view&listi...

Currently there are 170 games listed, so there's a pretty good chance you'll find a game that will work for you.

A lot of people may not realize this but Magic Realm can be played solitaire, and can be very enjoyable in that mode.

I thought Runebound was pretty good solo. I thought the rules were fairly simple also.

Vanished Planet and Return of the Heroes are both playable solitaire and I think either would be pretty satisfying played that way.

I'd recommend Mosby's Raiders (http://www.boardgamegeek.com/game/1669)

You raise forces fighting behind Union lines in Virginia (1862-63) increase your fame to draw more and more Union troops who chase you in greater numbers making life very intresting.

Thanks everyone for advice and suggestions.
Wow. People are so quick and helpful on this site! So thanks everyone for helping me out and the many great suggestions.
Ive now worked out how to use the advanced search effectively, plus the many suggestions you have all given me, means Im now completely spoilt for choice!
During my searches I was horrified to discover that Talisman has become quite a rare commodity. Several years ago I owned this game, plus almost all the expansions. I moved house (more like a quick evacuation due to untrustworthy house`mates`) and managed to leave the entire collection behind. What a goon!!!
Anyways no point in dwelling upon this horrific misdemeanor, and instead Ill focus my mind on more immediate matters, like which board games am I going to buy first. Im spoilt for choice so thanks for helping me out.
