Subject: U2 Incident brings down USA...so early rss

This is an AAR of a Vassal Play against my usual “live” opponent, Fred. We are playing with Optional Cards and CCW Variant. This AAR will describe our Twilight Struggle, card by card, so it could be a little longer to read. But you will follow all events of this tense (especially for USA) battle, helped by some screenshots. Cards in Italics are played for Events, otherwise for Operation Points.

Cards have been dealt, brains are heating...

I'm playing USA and I hope (foolishly) to survive Early War before powerful Mid War US Events will arrive in play...

My initial “hand” seems average with 1,875 OP/card, Europe Scoring card...and 3 Soviet Events (which are gladly in my hand rather than my opponent's)...

With initial Influence Points (IP), Poland and Finland become oppressed by tyranny while Canada, West Germany and Greece greet Democracy.



So, it’s 1945 and Twilight Struggle begins...

Turn 1 :



In Headline Phase, USA plays «Defectors» and USSR plays « Cambridge Five ». British spies have been held in check by courageous citizen who have choose freedom !

Playing (harmlessly) « Independent Reds », USSR overthrows Iranian government and, with some luck, controls Iran. USA plays « Fidel » to control Lebanon and gain influence in Malaysia. USSR plays « Destalinization » and, by losing Finland, controls Italy and Spain/Portugal, dominating Europe. With unplayable « Formosan Resolution » USA fails a coup in Iran, but USSR loses 1 IP. With « Nuclear Test Ban », USSR controls Iran, Syria and Afghanistan, dominating Middle-East, Asia (and still Europe)...This game starts like a nightmare for USA...With « Duck and Cover », USA controls Thailand and Greece, contesting Asia and Europe. With « Suez Crisis », USSR controls France and (again) dominates Europe. « CIA » fails to overthrow Iranian government. USSR plays « Nasser ». Without choice, USA must play « Europe Scoring » and cries...as USSR gains 7VP...which will be probably gained again later...Playing « Indo-Pakistani War », USSR controls Pakistan and dominates Asia (and still Europe and Middle-East). USA unsuccessfully launches « Socialist Governments » in Space.


Turn 2 :



So, USSR leads with 7VP and dominates both in Asia and Middle-East.
2 OP/Card and Middle-East Scoring in my Hand. Middle-East seems already lost, so I will try to fight for (more valuable) Asia.

In Headline Phase, USA plays « US/Japan Mutual Defense Pact ». USSR plays « Blockade », forcing USA to discard « COMECON », letting only 10 OP in all US' Hand....

USSR overthrowns US influence in Panama with « Red Scare/Purge ». Playing « Olympic Games », USA controls South Korea and dominates Asia. With (unfortunately) unplayable « NATO », USSR contests South Korea and gains influence in India. Playing « Truman Doctrine », USA regains control of South Korea and domination in Asia. With « Warsaw Pact Formed », USSR controls India and contests South Korea, dominating Asia. Playing « Special Relationship », USA controls South Korea and Laos/Cambodia, contesting Asia. USSR plays « Marshall Plan » (3rd « 4OP » card !) to control Burma and contests South Korea, dominating again in Asia. USA must play « Vietnam Revolts » to control South Korea and Indonesia, contesting Asia. It seems that USSR owns « Asia Scoring ». Bad luck for USA to own « Decolonization » as last playable card...
Playing « Containment », USSR contests Thailand, dominating again in Asia. I think I have no choice but playing « Decolonization »...contesting North Korea and Thailand but USSR gains influence in Laos/Cambodia, Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia. USSR plays now « Asia Scoring » for no gain but USA plays « Middle-East Scoring » for +4 USSR VP.


Turn 3 :



2,75 OP/Card and Asia scoring (so early again) in hand, a good hand but may be too late...

In Headline Phase, USA plays « East European Unrest » and USSR plays (again?) « The Cambridge Five », controlling Thailand.

USSR cancels « NORAD » with « UN Intervention » and controls East Germany and North Korea, dominating in Asia. Playing « NATO », USA overthrowns Iranian Government. With « Captured Nazi Scientist », USSR launches Sputnik...and gains 2VP. With « Nuclear Test Ban », USA controls
Laos/Cambodia, Philippines and Indonesia but USSR still dominates Asia...With « Truman Doctrine », USSR controls Poland, dominating Europe. « De Gaule Leads France » but USA controls Malaysia and Turkey, contesting Asia and Europe. USSR plays « Romanian Abdication » and dominates Europe. With « COMECON », USA controls Benelux, contesting Europe. USSR wins « Arab-Israeli War » (with some luck)...USSR leads now with 17VP !! USA plays « Asia Scoring » for +2VP to USSR...USSR plays « Middle-East Scoring » for no gain. USA wins « Korean War » and contests Italy.


Turn 4 (Middle War begins, for short time) :



2,11 OP/Card and Africa Scoring in hand.

In Headline Phase, USA plays « Cuban Missile Crisis » and USSR plays « Lone Gunman ».

USSR plays « U2 Incident » and wins ! Anyhow, with Europe Scoring in Hand, USSR Victory this turn seems certain...



Some Stats :
USSR dice rolls : 75% Success, 4.25 on average ;
US dice rolls : 25% Success, 3.25 on average.

Quick question though: Why didn't you Space Decolonization?

Before my fifth round, USSR was dominating in Asia...

So, if I have played Decolonization in Space, USSR would have gained 5 more VP...being at +18VP at start of Turn 3...
