Hi guys,

I recently bought Chronicle, Dwarf King and Guillotine to play with my family. But I also have 3 buds who i regularly play Hearts and Casino with.
2 of them aren't "gamers" and I am going to introduce them to
Chronicle and Dwarf King since they like trick taking games.

Are there any other good 4 player card games that would appeal to avid Hearts players? (it doesn't have to be played with standard playing cards)

Thanks

The theme might be a bit outlandish for your guys, but FWIW check out Blood Bowl Team Manager.

Tichu

They have a version for IOS so if you have an Idevice you can download and learn it that way before bringing it to the group.

Our group used to play Hearts constantly, then we learnt Tichu and haven't played Hearts since. So another recommendation for Tichu.

Skat is an awesome trick-taking game. Technically, it's a three-player game; four players play by having one player deal but not participate each hand. It's difficult to see it being a good game for a group in which no one already knows how to play, though.

42 might be a decent change of pace. Using dominoes instead of cards, it's unique enough to be unique, but similar enough to be similar to common trick-taking card games. I'd say it's simple enough for a totally unfamiliar group to pick up, but it's strategic enough to hold interest.

Whatever you choose, enjoy and happy gaming!

Have you played Pinochle that's one of the best Spades is kinda the other side of hearts and a fun one as well

Spades is played with a regular card deck. Pinochle is played with a special deck made of doubles going from 9 to ace

Wizard is pretty good but my favourite trick-taking game is Bargain Hunter=)
Tichu is also nice.
I own The Bottle Imp but don't think much of it.

I'm quite surprised Euchre hasn't been mentioned yet. Using just 24 cards from a standard deck I consider it a superb trick-taking game for four.

A couple trick takers I like are: Dragonmaster and The Dwarf King. The first is older and might be hard to find but the second is fairly new. They have about the same ideas although I like Dragonmaster better.

Love 'em even if a few games get scuttled from time to time.

The Great Dalmuti is a great one as well, and also very cheap. It's worked great for both gaming groups and non-gaming family members.

Tichu is a lot of fun as well - give it several plays to get used to it. If you get some people to learn the strategies of what passing different cards 'means' and others don't know it the game can get a little awkward, but there are some printouts here on BGG that can help with that I believe (by listing out what 'common passes' mean).

Oh Hell! is the trick taking game I play most. It's played with a standard deck of cards. It's better than hearts or spades, but wouldn't be surprised if modern designer card games trump it (pun intended). I played Great Dalmuti years ago, but don't remember much about it. Haven't played any of the others mentioned here.

Tichu is very popular as has been pointed out; I don't know that it's trick-taking specifically, but I won't re-open that debate whistle

I am amazed that no-one's mentioned Bridge. This is THE trick-taking game for 4 players, very deep, and a lot of fun.

42 is AWESOME. Its my favorite trick taking game

Tichu is good, depends on whether your buddies like the climbing game mechanic. I perfer it to trick taking so why the hell not.

Foppen is a pretty interesting trick taking game too.

I love Chronicle. Good choice! Some older games that are worth picking up if you can get them for cheap:

Arcana - it has a very cool bluffing element. This is a bluffing trick taking deck builder.

Myth: Pantheons - very thematic trick taking. So thematic it literally hurts the gameplay. The rules are hard to follow but once you figure it out, it is very rewarding. Might be a challenge for non-gamers. But honestly, I think Chronicle is one of the most advanced trick taking games so I would put Myth under that one in terms of gamer friendly.

One that my family likes is The Bottle Imp, a fun riff on trick taking that borrows from a great Robert Louis Stevenson short story for its unique mechanic.
