My son (age 10) and I play a variant where 20 cubes are symmetrically placed around the board at the beginning of the game (we've done various patterns). Players obtain the cubes as they move their pawns to those spaces. A player only wins if he both reaches the back line *and* has at least as many cubes than his opponent.

It becomes an interesting choice of blocking your opponent off from cubes as well as the back line.

We've tried assigning point values to different colors of cubes as well! It adds an extra layer to the game without significantly changing the overall feel.

Are you allowed to completely block your opponent off from cubes? Seems like that would be a bad idea.
