The Great Canadian Board Game Blitz (GCBGB) returns to Hal-Con for the fourth straight year and will take place on Saturday, November 9, starting at 10 a.m.

The GCBGB is a circuit of board game tournaments held at Canadian game conventions and retailers. Each participant plays different games of varying lengths and complexities over the span of six to eight hours, collecting points based on finishing rank in each game. The points are used to determine priority for choosing games in following rounds and to determine the winner at the end of the tournament.

There are a number of rounds (typically five at Hal-Con) and each round players choose a game to play from a list of 4-6 games. Then, players play the game they chose, earn points, and do the same for the next round. At the end, the winners are determined by cumulative number of points earned in all rounds. The fun part is that since it’s not an elimination tournament, everyone gets to play the same number of games.

Although the game lists for this event are never the same, the games in the tournament are usually strategic Euro-style games like Settlers of Catan, Ticket to Ride, Carcassonne, San Juan, Puerto Rico, Agricola and Power Grid, to name a few.

This is one of the few tournament events at Hal-Con that has preregistration. To preregister, please visit the tournament’s Facebook page and leave a message for tournament organizer, ME. If you do not have a Facebook account, you can also email your name to to register. This tournament only has space for 20 players, so don’t delay.
