My gaming group and I love Puerto Rico, Agricola and quite a few other good board games. But one thing that most of the games we play have in common is that there is a lot of downtime.

We recently discovered 7 Wonders and love that it has little to no downtime. What other games for larger groups are available that have little to no downtime and are fun to play (not gimicky or highly luck dependent)?

Gimicky is definitely in the eye of the beholder.

I liked The Resistance: Avalon, which seems like it would fit.

Age of Empires (Age of Discovery) isn't too bad as long as there is no AP.Age of Empires III: The Age of Discovery

It will play 6 with extra pieces but becomes much harder.
Each player places their pieces, one at a time in order so as soon as you place your worker, you need to watch what your opponents do before placing your next one.

Also for 5 is Lancaster. You can be done placing your knights but other's actions can bring your knights back to be placed again.

Another good (tho tough for 5) game is Hansa Teutonica. Constant planning is required for your move.

I like the 5 player expansion for Stone Agebut there you have to wait for your turn to come to do all your actions.

I've had good luck with 5p El Grande as turns are pretty quick. Downtime comes when choosing cards and then the scoring phases. That maxes out at 5 though, and is OOP.

On the lighter side Diamant, Sequence, and Saboteur are my go-to 6p+ choices.

There's always Poker or party games like Say Anything or Ca$h 'n Gun$.

Jungle Speed is a very fast game of pattern recognition where you really have to be on your toes at all times. There's some luck, but it all comes down to who can spot the match the fastest.

I just want to add that while I'm open to any game, our group would prefer games that are NOT party games. I should have been clearer at the start (this is what I meant by "gimmicky").

Some of these suggestions do look very promising.

Adel verplichtet (Hoity Toity) is a great game to play in a group of 5 players.

It has very little downtime (because all players make their decisions simultaneously) and it's not about luck, but about calculating what your opponents are going to do and choosing the right thing. I think it's hilarious.

Game of Thrones the boardgame 2nd ed.

Battlestar Galactica

Resistance/resistance Avalon

All have a little downtime, but most people are still involved in other players phases/turns etc. All great games and best with 5 or 6 players.

you could try to get this to reduce downtime for most games:

Airlines Europe plays very well with 5, and since you only get 1 action during your turns downtime is minimal. it even has an official variant rule which makes you play up to 6 people with only a very slight change in the setup.

My usual suggestion for this question is Civilization, or the advanced version.
During other players' turns you may be involved in his/her conflicts, and will most likely be called on to trade.

Rex: Final Days of an Empire has some down time but all players are engaged during the other players turns or you feel like you may miss something.

It is also a a good game with 5 to 6 players but it kind of slides off with fewer.

If you like Jungle Speed, Ghost Blitz and Pick-a-Pig are fantastic.

A 5 player game that I enjoy is Genoa. Assuming you have a group that enjoys making deals and meta-gaming, there is never any downtime.

Citadels

Race for the Galaxy, but you'll need the first expansion (Race for the Galaxy: The Gathering Storm) to make it five player.
