I guess title says it all. mostly.
I guess what i would like to know is how much of this game is luck and luck management and how much is skill? can you get better, say, at destroying ships and avoiding escorts the more you play this game?

A good u-boat sub captain would take his boat right in the middle of a convoy on the surface at night, destroy a few ships and escape almost unnoticed. also many reports and stories I have read portray their ability to evade, hide or escape using squalls or their use of sun light as well as moonlight to their advantage. are any of these things portrayed in this game?
can you end around a convoy?
not that it would effect my purchase. I am just excited to learn about some of the details.
any hints of a pacific version if hunters takes off?

any body know if their is a way to use pay pal to pre order this game? so far its cc only from what I can tell.

I have played endless hours of silent hunter, all but the last version. I am anxious to see how much this game will offer with out being too heavy.

+1 to all your questions, especially this:

I'm curious how much this will be a game and how much a narrative generator. This wont affect my purchase. I'm just curious.

I know the designer wanted it to have more 'game' in it then B-17. So narrative + game. There is an AAR on consim. Don't know if was posted here.
Another effort in this context is the player made mod to U-Boat Leader which has a preview video out. That one models one boat and you and you crew will definitely gain skill.

IIRC, successful patrols can result in improvements to crew, plus you can get expert officers. These all have an effect on your chances of future success.

Jason and Killy:

I was able to play The Hunters at PrezCon13 back in February. Due to the structure of the game the dice (luck) plays an important role, but in my personal opinion, not nearly as much as in B-17.

Greg has come up with rules that enhance your experience through a Risk/Reward mechanic that puts you in the Kaleun's boots. Then of course the dice take over.

As Greg can tell you, I managed to place third although I probably botched a rule here or there at some point. It is random enough to keep you entertained without feeling like you have no input on your crew's fate. I can't recommend it enough for a great solitaire experience that doesn't take a) a whole lot of space or b) a whole lot of time.

Not to mention Greg is one of the nicest chaps you'll ever meet! (Well... for an Army guy!)
