I found the rules for carrying other pieces a bit complicated, and so came up with some simpler ones that seem to work well.

1) Don't keep track of whether a unit is currently being carried.

2) If a unit carries another into combat, neither the carrier nor the carried get an attack that round.

Also, we didn't play the rule that you can withdraw from combat, or have any restrictions on where you can carry pawns. This meant that it was relatively easy to use a rook to quickly move a pawn to the end of the board, but this seems to make the game more interesting.
