I've seen a couple of threads about lists of thematic decks inspired by parts of Star Wars movies.

Unfortynately this reminds me one 'bad feeling' that I have about one aspect of this game that is my difficulty to see some sort of storytelling in standard rules objective cards selection and their progressive damaging and destruction.

Consider these (incomplete) LS and DS thematic deck that should simulate the part of Episode IV movie in which 'our heroes' are inside the Death Star:

Inside the Death Star
Light Side
- [03] [Jedi] Forgotten Heroes
- [16] [Light Neutral] Rumors at the Cantina
- [48] [Jedi] Self-Preservation
Dark Side
- [19] [Sith] Fall of the Jedi
- [20] [Sith] Counsel of the Sith
- [24] [Sith] Cruel Interrogations
- [26] [Imperial Navy] Imperial Command
- [32] [Imperial Navy] Take Them Prisoner
- [50] [Sith] Serve the Emperor

My obvious question is: how these objectives can represent the LS attempt to escape from Death Star and the DS attempt to capture or kill them?

Well, consider that I own 2 copies of the core set and all the expansions sold till now and that I'm trying to write a set of solo rules for this game .... but standard objective selection and damaging system is something I have problems to understand completely.

A Star Wars Lcg duel looks like only a 'big battle' between units (a battle in which a Rancor is able to destroy an an X-Wing ...).

I'd like to be able to introduce house rules for better representing some sort of storytelling (like Lord of the Ring Lcg, for example).
and battling between different types of units.

OK! This is my personal feeling. Obviously many people can disagree with me.

The upcoming challenge decks starting with Balance of the Force seem to be perfect for the storytelling aspect.

Building some thematic light side decks to go up against the Death Star II while it's constructed and brought online should be loads of fun.

Likewise having Vader and some hired scum (and in future releases, the Black Sun) try and track down Luke Skywalker.

I appreciate what others are doing to build thematic scenarios, but I'm thinking the challenge decks are where the theme is really going to ooze, and I am excited to see what other ones are going to come down the pipe.

Would you rather have a good game, or a good story? Personally when I want a good story I just pop in the movie, I don't expect the card game to be something it isn't (and IMHO shouldn't be).

The Rancor was unleashed into the docking bay where that X-Wing was landed. ^_^

(I had to chime in, since the example in the original post is taken from the "Thematic Decks" thread I created...)

I did not put that list together as a way to tell a story. It started with me putting together a deck with only Hoth-themed objective sets, so as to see a lot of Hoth cards in play. And then I spent a few minutes, just for fun, seeing what other themes could be used in a similar way, and I ended up with that list.

Regards.

You could always create a scenario within the game's framework as well.

For simulating the infiltration, rescuing Leia and escape of the Death Star, try the following.

We'll break a few rules during setup and deck construction, but other than that, the game plays as normal.

DS player (Sith Faction) begins with the following Objectives in play:
Imperial Command
Take Them Prisoner*
The Ultimate Power
*Replace the reaction on Take Them Prisoner with (Reaction: After this objective enters play, search opponent's hand and deck for Leia Organa. Capture that card at this objective)

LS player (Jedi Faction) begins with the following objectives in play:
Alderaan's Promise*
Forgotten Heroes**
Rumors at the Cantina**

*Add the following text to Alderaan's Promise - "This objective cannot be engaged."
**Add the following text to all LS objective cards - "Interrupt: When this objective is destroyed, search your objective deck to choose your next objective and put it into play immediately. Shuffle your objective deck."

DS Deck:
OBJECTIVES (8)
2x Defense Protocol
2x Imperial Command
2x Take Them Prisoner
2x The Ultimate Power

UNIT (25)
2x Admiral Motti
2x Communications Officer
2x Darth Vader (The Desolation of Hoth)
4x Death Star Trooper
2x Duty Officer
2x Grand Moff Tarkin
4x Heavy Stormtrooper Squad
3x Interrogation Droid
2x ISB Interrogators
2x Superlaser Engineer

ENHANCEMENT (8)
4x Control Room
2x Defense Upgrade
2x Vader's Lightsaber

EVENT (11)
2x Force Choke
2x Interrogation
2x It's Worse
1x Superlaser Blast
2x Tear This Ship Apart
2x Trooper Assault

FATE (6)
4x Heat of Battle
2x Twist of Fate

LS Deck:
OBJECTIVES (9)
1x Alderaan's Promise
2x Questionable Contacts
2x Fleeing the Empire
2x Forgotten Heroes
2x Rumors at the Cantina

UNIT (17)
2x Bothan Spy
2x C-3PO
2x Chewbacca
2x Han Solo (Core)
1x Leia Organa
2x Luke Skywalker (Escape from Hoth)
2x Obi-Wan Kenobi
2x R2-D2
2x Undercover Operative

ENHANCEMENT (14)
1x Chewbacca's Bowcaster
1x Han's Heavy Blaster Pistol
4x Hidden Outpost
2x Jedi Lightsaber
4x Old Ben's Spirit
2x Trust Your Feelings

EVENT (13)
2x Hidden Cache
2x It Could Be Worse
4x Jedi Mind Trick
2x Let the Wookiee Win
2x Our Most Desperate Hour
1x Rescue Mission

FATE (6)
2x Heat of Battle
2x Protection
2x Twist of Fate

I tried to keep things as thematic as possible, only including cards applicable to the story (that's why Pilot Luke is used despite being inferior to Jedi Luke, Alderaan can only be destroyed via a Superlaser blast, etc)

Disclaimer: I rolled these off of the top of my head with the intent of a thematic matchup and I have not tested them at all. As such, they are likely horribly imbalanced and in need of tweaks.

Good job!

I was thinking the same thing: probably the only way to have some sort of themed duels is to break the rule of objective driven deck building and choose cards one by one (and add some special rules).

I thought the new Luke set was a nice touch for theme. It's all of Luke's part in the beginning of ESB: Luke, a tauntaun, a snowspeeder, a battle of hoth and heat of battle (the art even shows him blowing up a ATAT).

I enjoy the Star Wars card game as a fun game. If I want story telling, I have the core rulebook for Edge of the Empire.

Agreed, and the Luke itself is thematically well done in that, he can pilot a vehicle that does some fighting, then when it blows up and gets stepped on, he jumps out of it to keep on fighting, just like ESB Hoth battle. The only thing that would've made the pod better would've been to include a Dak Ralter card that does a similar vehicle attach thing... but doesn't jump out of the vehicle in time... ^_^
