Do you always have to move forward? or can you move in any of the 3 hexes
Can you move backwards?
How many ap would it cost

I believe that gladiators can move into any adjacent hex for the cost of 1AP. There is an extra cost if they change facing. It is specifically mentioned in the equites section that gladiators can move backwards when it states equites "cannot move laterally or backward as dismounted gladiators can."

Though I am by no means an expert in these rules.....

This is the way we've always played it - 1AP to move laterally or backwards.

Ok so you don't have to pay facing changes as you encircle an opponent. Only in the last hex (if you are adjacent) and want to change facing to attack an opponent.
