How would you describe BGG type board games to someone you just met? Preferably in a way that makes them want to try them?
Target audience: University students.

"Modern board games are undergoing a creative explosion, adopting design discoveries from video games and from scads of new designers building off each other's ideas on the internet. While many of these games would be barely recognizable to people familiar with 'classics' like Scrabble and Monopoly, the new games are as often about simplicity as complexity, whittling down ideas to make a game as easy to play as possible."

I guess that's not describing what games ARE so much as explaining why they might want to look into them more. But in 15 seconds (actually 18; I timed it), I think that's really what you want to do. It's not like you could convey what modern games are LIKE in 15 seconds.

It's for the bunfight (freshers fair). The society has a table in a very crowded, noisy sports hall, with 100 other tables.

Reiner Knizia is a god among men. He is the best German export since Claudia Schiffer. If you haven't heard of him, he lives in Britain and has designed 300 board games. Gamers all over the world know his name. Even at his worst, his designs are better than Monopoly or Cluedo.

"You know how, when you play games like Monopoly or Scrabble, and the game takes forever, and you can know who's going to win in the first twenty minutes, but you still have to play through, and it sucks? These games are nothing like that."

That's how I explain Eurogaming to new folks.

More fun than Angry Birds.
More social than Facebook.
More trash talk than Halo.

Add in more brain stimulation than homework and all of the above and literally thousands of games to choose from and you have possibly the best sit down hobby ever.

Statistically you'll probably spend 40-70% of the rest of your life's non-sleeping hours with your eyes glued to a screen.

You owe it to yourself to try modern board games.

Accurate, but almost designed to drive potential players away.

Instead of rolling dice on your turn, you get to make interesting decisions.

Unless you're playing Catan.

Now, pretend you're saying that to a group of hipsters. It might work. Or you might be called a douche and/or get things thrown at you.

"Remember Monopoly as a kid? Remember the times you thought it was fun, and then you played it, and you hated everyone and everything and you were happy the people who made it are all dead? Take away the rage, the frustration, the boredom, the lack of choice, but they're actually fun like you remember it being. They can get a little more complicated, but a hell of a lot more fun..."
