I have often thought of writing a game session report of Arkham Horror, a game I totally enjoy but one that doesn’t get much play. In the spirit of Halloween, I have decided to spend 31 days playing games of AH. I plan on using the characters to write a story-based session report, tracking in as much detail about everything that occurs. I will add photos as I can, and try to bring both Arkham and the characters to life.
First Session (starting a week early) – AH base set
Monday Sept 23 (setup)
Tuesday Sept 24 (play)
After arriving in Arkham and feeling lost, Mark Harrigan finds himself sitting in the back of the South Church. In his duffle bag is the flamethrower he cobbled together, a molotov cocktail, a small book titled Eltdown Shards that gave off an eerie feeling, and an unopened envelope. The envelope brings back memories, dark depressing memories of Sophie, cut down in the height of their relationship. He opens the envelope and photos, newspaper clippings and a library card fall out. After studying them, Mark now knows what killed Sophie and that it comes from somewhere named R’lyeh!
One of the photos is of a serpent-like human. Written across the back of the photo is the phrase “Yig’s followers advance his cause, even in death.”
At that very moment, on the other side of town, Agnes Baker starts to clean up. The last customer left Velma’s Dinner over an hour ago, and it was getting close to closing time. On the floor under one of the tables Agnes finds a leather bag. Opening it up, she finds a stick of dynamite and an old book with the title Nameless Cult. The sight of the tome brings back the nightmare she’s been having for the past month. In her nightmares, indescribable creatures chase her as she withers them with unspeakable words of power. In the end she wakes as they overwhelm her, only to know they will return the next night.
Agnes spots the Arkham Times as she takes out the garbage and reads the headline “Ill Wind Grips Arkham”. Feeling dizzy, she closes her eyes and in a flash she sees the robed figure of a cultist in the graveyard walking away from a shimmering, dark rip in the night sky. She hears a serpentine hiss speak what sounds like “S-s-s-Celeano”.
Leaving the church, Mark heads to the Silver Twilight Lounge. He has heard that they might have a lead to where R’yleh might be. As he reaches out to knock, the door opens and a man introducing himself as Carl Sanford tells him that he knows what he is there for. Carl invites Mark to join the order, saying that what he seeks in in the Inner Sanctum. After taking Marks money, he is handed a membership card and the door is abruptly closed in his face! One of the henchmen is overheard speaking to another. “Good Work Undone. Unique items are rumored to be hidden in the Eastown Streets. I hear there are Ghouls showing up in the ruins of a great city on the Unvisited Isle.”
Following a strange pull, Agnes finds herself at the same graveyard from her premonition. Thanks to the warning, she easily hides from the cultist and, before she knows what she’s doing, she steps through the dark rip. She finds herself in a Great Hall. Studying the pictures on the walls, she finds important information on what is happening on Arkham as well as the word Celeano. The reptilian Old One Yig is rising.
Making her way through the beautiful halls, Agnes steps through an archway. Warm light surrounds her, easing her mind and making her feel more alive!
Working towards the Unvisited Isle, Mark is ambushed by a Ghoul on Merchant St. Not wanting to waste time, he easily toasted it with his flamethrower. Catching a page out of the newspaper, he reads a second page story: “Slum Murders Continue – Robed figures sought for information.” As Mark walks down the street, he overhears a bum; “I swear I heard to baying of Hounds in the woods… Yuggoth is in the trees!”
Upon stepping onto the Unvisited Isle, Mark finds himself transported to a Great City. Looking around for a way to return, he finds a glowing stone. As he picks it up, he feels refreshed and finds himself back on the island. Unsuccesfully he tries to think of a way to keep this from happening to anyone else.
Agnes steps through a doorway and finds herself back in the graveyard. Remembering all that she had seen, she closes the gate so nothing can follow her through. A flash of insight tells her that there is another gate in the Unnamable. Hearing a cry from overhead, she watches the sky for Nightgaunts and continues onward.
MEANWHILE: The Arkham police have all been stricken with the Blue Flu. Prisoners escape and crime runs rampant.
Agnes, trapped in the graveyard by 2 cultists, hides behind an ancient family crypt. Reading her tome, she finds tucked inside a parchment titled Storm of Spirits. While she is studying it A man wanders by. “My name is Richard Upton Pickman.”Striking up a conversation, she finds out he is an artist on holiday from Boston. After a time, he excuses himself and moves on.
Scratching his head, Mark finally recalls a symbol in the Great City. Scratching it in the dirt at the base of the gate, it closes and Mark breathes a sigh of relief. To the East, near Independence Square, Mark can just make out the telltale shimmer of another gate! Just as he begins to head in that direction, a Formless shape appears next to him, ready to attack! Without thinking, Mark aims his trusty flamethrower and toasts the shape.
Mark heads toward the Unnamable, entering the gate to the Abyss. Sneaking past a group of alien creatures, he makes his way toward safety.
Gathering her courage, Agnes exits the graveyard onto Rivertown Rd. Before they can see her, she flings her dynamite at one and Withers the other with ancient words of power she can barely remember. As they die, they sing praises to Yig and shout of his impending approach! Thanking you for the honor, they die! The blast from the battle seems to start a heat wave throughout Arkham. Screams of terror echo around you.
Running as fast as she can, Agnes reaches the Woods and leaps into the gate she finds there. She is attacked almost instantly by a witch of Yuggoth. Unleashing a Storm of Spirits upon the witch, she screams “NOT THIS TIME!” Suddenly, the nightmares she has had seem to drain from her mind. She knows they will not be there when she sleeps tonight.
Stumbling blindly, Mark finds himself at the gate returning to Arkham. He is jumped by a Ghoul who easily falls to his flamethrower. Wiping the sweat from his eyes, he notices the icy cold air rushing through the streets.
Mark tries one more time to close the gate to the Abyss – SUCCESS!
Agnes, strangely missing her Wither spell, returns and closes the gate to Yuggoth. Rumors of a Maniac roaming around the Witch house hint at another gate.
Walking through Another World, Agnes glimpses Vera’s Diner through a floating window, raising her hopes of getting home.
Meanwhile, Mark, running as fast as he can, tries to get past the totally alien angles of R’lyeh without tripping and falling into eternity.
Back in Arkham, a surge of monsters hit the streets and skys. Miskatonic University opens their Egyptian Exhibit.
Mark returns from R’lyeh only to find a cultist guarding the gate! At the same time, Agnes returns from Another Dimension with an important clue! While she closes her gate, Mark, Unable to close the gate, is forced to destroy the cultist. As his hood slips away – revealing the reptilian face of serpent man, he gasps with is final breath “YIG IS HERE!”. His features melt and he transforms into a menacing Ancient Old One – YIG!
(Killing the cultist pushed the doom track to 10)
Yig stands over a trembling Agnes and an angry Mark. Speaking ancient words of evil power, the two heroes are cursed! Agnes screams for the Storm of spirits, but Yig dances away only to be caught square by Marks flamethrower. Constantly moving, both heroes avoid the spray and spittle of the huge serpentine figure.
Working together they slowly pick apart Yig, catching him in their crossfire and doing their best to take as little damage as possible. They seem to be pushing Yig into R’lyeh!
At the last moment, with his feet sliding into the gate, Yig reaches out and catches Agnes. With his quickly fading strength, Mark shouts his rage and washes Yig with the last drops of fuel and flame. Yig has been defeated, but at great cost. Agnes lies a broken body among the rubble, and Mark will NEVER get the information from R’lyeh. Yig will be waiting for Mark for what may as well be eternity.
