How do they justify their list? Anyone can create a list (and many do)

Actually, this is about what I'd expect from a poll of non-bgg-users.

Actually, it's FAR BETTER than I'd expected when I clicked on it.

Did you guys want to play Le Havre tonight?

Nah bro, Steve just scored a 82nd printing of Hi Ho Cherry-o, we're going to try to get through that tonight after an opening round of Uno.

Maybe the original title was "Most wide-selling games of all time", which is less eye-catching. Seriously Chess-Monopoly-Scrabble-Risk just because you can find them anywhere?

Anyway, we shouldn't give this list more value than it deserves.

How many have you played? Click items to mark as completed.

Honestly, this looks a lot like a marketing survey wearing a false mustache.

That's actually a pretty interesting list given that it crosses into (over?) so many market segments, from mainstrea to hobby groups.

Actually, it looks pretty close to range of games that Barnes and Nobels and other niche big-box franchises have been increasingly stocking over the past few years.

Now - I'm not sure what criteria they are defining as best games of "all time" ... other than the fact that they probably relate somewhat to the number of sales and general distribution volumes.

Actually it's very interesting to see the number of votes per game. If Monopoly & Scrabble have ~100,000 votes and 7 Wonders, Carcassonne, etc < 1,000 ... this list is obviously bogus.

I was really confused until I realized it was an aggregate ranking, it looks like. That makes a lot more sense. And makes it a lot more surprising regarding several titles on there.

Like, I love Dominant Species and think it is amazing. I would not have expected it on that list.

They also have this list of top 100 games on BGG.

Apparently I've played more games on the first list than on the top 100 list.

That's a really odd mix of hobby and mainstream games. Also, I find it amusing that it specifically says that card games and RPGs are excluded, and yet UNO is #8, Apples to Apples is #10, and Dominion is #11. I know they probably meant that CCGs were excluded, but still.

Or that traditional card games (poker, etc) were excluded.

Diplomacy is on there. A "family game" generally shouldn't end in disownment and/or divorce.

Or actual shooting. I never condone violence to settle disputes, but that one time Germany betrayed me and with Turkey demolished me in the Fall of 1916? You can obviously understand and forgive what happened next, right?

Agreed, if anything this list shows that the hobby is picking up enough headway that it's starting to appear on the radars of casual/non-gamers (in terms of spend or whatever metric was used to compile it). This is actually a tentatively hopeful list.

Indeed. Despite containing a large quantity of crap (Monopoly, Pictionary, Arkham Horror), it's heartening to see a few hobby board games creep into mainstream recognition.
