Since 2008, there has been a wargame secret Santa (aka Santa Grogs) that has run more or less concurrently with the main BGG site wide one.

Of course ours is way cooler because it's all about wargames.

I also think that having a small number of people (we had about 150 last year if memory serves) makes it more personal.

Today marks the 90 day countdown to Christmas.

If you took part last year, you know how much fun it was.

If you missed out last year, plan to hop on the bandwagon this year.

Last year's exchange ran pretty smoothly, and I'm hoping this years event is even better for whoever* runs it. Let's hear your suggestions.

* I'm not ruling out running it, but last year someone offered to step up and run it this year, and I've offered them a shot at it if they're available.

Very simple.

Every participant is assigned a target. You know who your target is, and will send him a new or used copy of a game that is in his WishList. This list should be about 20 games long or more, and be a mixture of rare and common games, cheap and not-so-cheap, etc., so that the "donor" has a certain leeway. If your only choice is Case Blue in mint condition, the chances that you receive that game is very, very low ...

The donor is unknown to the target, which why it is called Secret Santa, or, in our case, Santa Grogs.

You will be able to send e-mails to your target, and he will will have no clue from who they come from, unless you drop a few hints.

This year there will be a new twist : Everyone sends two games : one game to their target, and the other game to me. devil

The only year I regretted was the year I didn't participate. My only bad experience was racing to find a reasonable way to get a gift to a European and now I just request that I don't get international targets. I think that will likely be on the rise as shipping costs went nuts this summer which, unfortunately, makes the worldwide thing MUCH more complicated for both the SantaGrogs and BGG Secret Santa event.

When it is your turn to send a VASSAL move, the wait is excruciating. When it's my turn, well, I've been busy.

If you get a foreign target you can usually find a local retailer in their country to ship to them, unless they live somewhere really exotic (Asia, South America etc.). In that case hope they like ziplock games.

Is this a thread for signing up or will that appear somewhere else on the site?

There will an official thread that will be put up in October on the BGG Wargame sub-forum.

There will be a deadline, and after that, if you didn't put your name on that list, NO wargames for YOU this Christmas. arrrh

Last Christmas, I sent two new games to my victim, and by coincidence, received also from an unknown donor two excellent games : Andean Abyss and Unhappy King Charles!.

How does it work? i.e. some looks at your "wanted" games - or just looks at the games and makes a determination of what they think you would like?

Both -- the want list is the easiest to fulfill, but if you have an idea for one that you think would be amazing (and they haven't marked it owned), you should generally feel free.

It's always amazing, count me very in.

Any rules that people would like to have in place?

Would a subscription to one of the wargame mags be ok?

What about miniatures - in the past we've largely said no, but if its on someone's wish list....

Opening and closing dates? Last year someone was very unhappy that the sign up closed very close to the end of the GMT fall sale, saying that it didn't give enough time to shop - but not everyone wants games from GMT.

Others?

2nd time someone metioned secret santa this week
I wrote down a new wishlist and from the 24 games that made my list, only 2 were euro games(caylus and agricola)and all others were wargames.
Maybe a sign to sign up for wargame secret santa in stead of the regular secret santa

Perhaps preemptive angel sign ups? I know we don't often have no-shows on the delivery list, but it might make the organizer's life easier.
