Let me start off by saying that I'm a film geek. I love cinema. And I especiall LOVE Jidaigeki and Chanbara films. I've seen more of Samurai Cinema than any other genre.

Kurosawa's Seven Samurai is my all time favorite movie. Yojinbo, Sanjuro, Ronin Gai, The Twilight Samurai, Samurai Rebellion, Chusingura films, Goyokin, Throne of Blood, Samurai Assassin, The Zatoichi films, The Hidden Blade, Sword of Doom, 13 Assassins, Hara-Kiri (both), The Hidden Fortress, The Samurai Trilogy, Kill!, Sword of the Beast, When the Last Sword is Drawn . . . I can go on for days, man, DAYS!

I can't get enough of it. Toshiro Mifune is one of my effin' heroes! (The others being Humphrey Bogart and Bill Murray)

Anyway, enough of the long-winded intro. Most samurai/feudal Japanese games focus on territory acquisition and warring daimyos and the shogunate system. Things like that. There are a ton of them.

What I've been really looking for a board game that really captures the fun action and swordplay and thematic elements of those films that makes them great. A small group of ronin defend a village from brigands or clear out a village of corrupt officials and hired swordsman. You know? Like Seven Samurai or Yojinbo: the game! Ronin, Bushi, Shinobi, katana and wakizashi slashing torsos, iaijutsu duels!

Like Tannhauser with bushi and swords, but not really. I really don't know, because I can't think of anything like what I'm talking about. Which is why I'm asking!

I'm hoping the BGG community could throw some suggestions my way. Maybe there's the perfect game that I'm thinking of out there somewhere! If you liked the game or not, just spit them out!

Thanks!

"Many that live deserve death. And some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them? Then do not be too eager to deal out death in judgement. For even the very wise cannot see all ends."

"I wish it need not have happened in my time," said Frodo. "So do I," said Gandalf, "and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us."

I enjoyed Samurai Blades which was part of the Cry Havoc series of games. Looks good on the table. Can find it occasionally.

I don't know anything about the genre but check out the Japan Family as I suspect it'll give you some options.

Samurai Sword is great with the right group!

Meanwhile the Okko series is a very good, if a bit simple, miniatures type game. That will get you those cool situations of tactics and zeal
