Hi! We're proud to announce a new board game cafe, coming soon to NYC. A tip of the hat to the others who have blazed this trail and convinced us that it is possible.

The Uncommons (http://www.uncommonsnyc.com/) is aiming to open next month near NYU in Greenwich Village, downtown Manhattan. It's not going to be easy- these are some of the highest rents on earth. But we've got a great board game community here, and plan on operating much like a coffee shop for most of the day, then becoming a dedicated gamer-meetup/play space in the afternoons and evenings. We'll stay open late, offer a wide library of games, and charge a minimal cover fee of $5 per person to borrow and play in-store.

Definitely let us know what you think- any feedback is greatly appreciated. Drinks, food, must-have game titles? Groups we should reach out to?

Oh, and we've launched our Kickstarter, which will run for 30 days. Check it out at http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1460605990/the-uncommons...

Thanks,
Greg - The Uncommons NYC

Cool, I'm there all the time! You'll be competing with the monthly NerdNYC Board Game Night in ThinkCoffee at Mercer Street, but you probably already knew that.

I'm curious to check it out when you open!

EDIT: Agreed about the subject title edit, as this subforum applies as far north as Maine and as far south as Maryland.

Is this S.O.P.? It would seem the announcement of a new local venue has more value in a regional forum than it would in a general/international forum, no?

Everything in the top 50 here that plays in under 4 hours and isn't a CCG/LCG. (no point in having library games that require pre-built decks to play them)

Base plus expansions for the most well known gateway games that most people already know like Ticket to Ride, Catan, Carcassonne, Dominion, 7 Wonders, Pandemic, Battlestar Galactica.

A good number of popular abstracts like Hive, Blokus, Ingenious, Yinsh, Torres, Through the Desert.

A handful of "party games" that are popular with gamers. Resistance/Resistance: Avalon, Time's Up Title Recall!, Dixit, Liar's Dice (Perudo).

Whole lot of cheap/small games that take up little space but many know and and enjoy like Hanabi, Bohnanza, Bang, Citadels, Innovation, Glory to Rome, Jambo, Jaipur, Lost Cities, Haggis, Roll Through the Ages, Love Letter, Battle Line, Space Hulk: Death Angel (on clearance now at B&N).

Groups to reach out to for certain:

Nyeek
NYC Boardgames and Cardgames Group
NerdNYC
Queens NYC Strategy Games Meetup

BGG has a really strict policy about anything linked to the promotion of a crowd-funding project, so yeah it's S.O.P.

Unfortunate in this instance, because you're absolutely right Mark a well titled post in the NorthEast forum is going to reach those to whom this matters most.

That said, nothing stopping you as a third party with no involvement making that post yourself and linking back to this one.

Returning to one of the original questions about groups to reach out to… Greg, Mark here is the organizer for ConnCon (the closest sizable dedicated board game Con we have in the area) as well as MaybeGames which is an annual all day game event in Pelham that just happened. Both of are awesome, and Mark is someone you should be connecting with for sure.

I've contacted the OP to explain the situation and hopefully work out a compromise. We'll wait and see.
