10. That really weak monster that you know you should be able to beat, and don't.

9. Goblins, uhhh, they are sooo boring.

8. Elementals, there seem to be only 4 types, come on get a little creative here.

7. Skeletons, the reanimated undead bone picker, yawn. Who was he in his past life? I don't know but now I have to fight him.

6. Vampires.

5. Werewolves.

4. Zombies.

3. Slimes and Cubes... I thought these were stupid when I played D&D back in the day, they didn't get any better with age.

2. Orcs, yeah Lord of the Rings overrated generic, dumb monster. How many times have we seen these in the past.

1. Giant Rat, Really! come on! out of all the monsters in imagination, fantasy and myth this is all you could come up with!!! You spent production costs on a Rat! If I see another rat in any game I'm gonna puke (looking at you Dungeon Run). Lets come up with a little imagination and figure something new out.

There are so MANY others... lions and tigers and bears (oh my!) as well as dragons, gnomes, spiders, snakes, elementals, killer bunnies, trolls and so on.

My vote is for the dragon.

Aw come on - nothing is worse than a Mimic. Typical day in dungeon-land:
La La La, kill a skeleton, kill a rat, same old-same old... Hey, what's this? A shiny treasure chest just for little old me? Yay! Oh No! - ow ow ow it's biting me. And now I'm dead. Stupid Mimic.

Gibbering Mouther has to top my list. I have a friend who loves to use these and they are among the most annoying things to fight.

Anything with a save or die power, especially at lower levels.

I'd have to vote for the stupid Gnoll. What the heck? Is it a gnome? Is it a troll? What gives?

Any critter that worships a deity whose name is pronounced "You-know-who" (Yeenoghu) is a complete knee-biter in my book. "All hail the great and powerful You-know-who!!" Losers.

Oh, there are worse - anything by FGA, for example (Brother Against Brother; Eagle and the Sun).

re: dungeon-crawling monsters. Rust Monster, and any other similar creatures that have no (other)earthly reason for their existence but to screw the players. What kind of ecosystem could this being evolve in? What could be its body chemistry to make such a bizarre biology work? Oh, who cares, it's just there because the DM let the players get equipment that he now wants to take away.

Though I did greatly enjoy the Interview with a Rust Monster in Dragon magazine long ago.

Couldn't this be broadened to include any unappealing animal or insect ballooned up to enormous size and labeled "monster"?

I'd say the slimes and cubes are the worst. I don't mind giant rats in games, they're overused, but at least they make more sense than cubes of jello with translucent brains which slither around dungeons keeping the place clean.

I never much liked the slimes or cubes either. But whenever I imagine fighting skeletons, this is what comes to mind:
