Got this game and played it a couple of times last night.

During the games we played, overheating never was an issue. No ship ever got more than 1 overheat counter during any of the games.

I was wondering if this is typical.

Has anyone ever lost a ship due to overheating?

They have indeed, but not by accident. Your deck needs to be designed to win by over heating to make this work.

OK I get it. Players can create decks so that attacks will cause enemy's ship to overheat.

In order to make overheating more common in a game where players decks are such that the only way to win is by destroying the enemy hull (and not by overheating the enemy ship) I was thinking a neat variant would be that:

Players can activate their ship's special ability any time during their turn (not just during the preparation phase). But the penalty for doing so outside the preparation phase is to take 1 overheat token onto their hull.
The 2 max use of special abilities per turn would still apply.
