Hi all,

I have a technical question to ask for a card game I've been designing. Essentially, I'd like to create a template in Illustrator or Indesign and have all the text be linked to an Excel file that has columns containing all the info. When info in the Excel file is changed, I'd like it to automatically update in the Illustrator/InDesign file.

Take MtG for example. In the Excel file, there would be columns for Name, card type, card text, flavor text, etc.

To go one step further, I was wondering if this link could be used to change the art style of the card. Like say if there was an additional column in the MtG excel file for color. If you put red, it would automatically import the correct border for a red card.

I saw an article online recently that mentioned something about csv files being linked to InDesign for this purpose, but I lost the link and haven't been able to find it again.

Is anybody familiar with doing something like this? It'd really help me with prototyping since it would update without me touching it.

Thanks in advance!

The feature you're looking for is called 'Data Merge' - there's a three-part tutorial on InDesign Secrets here:
