I want the community's input on the ten greatest themes in modern boardgaming. This is a project that is going somewhere, as everybody will see soon, maybe, but in order not to derail the discussion, I want to focus strictly on the subject. My thoughts are all over the place, and I'd like some clarity. Make your arguments however you'd like, whether it's board game rankings, numbers, sales, awards, or whatever. Try to stay away from copyrighted subjects. Things like Star Wars or Lord of the Rings are not appropriate for this project.

1. Trains
2. Zombies
3. Space
4. World War II
5. Pirates
6. Ancient Egypt
7. Fantasy RPG boardgames/cardgames
8. Farm/City/Civ building
9. Merchants trading/buying/selling
10. Fighting (Kemet, Small World, Struggle of Empires, Risk Legacy, Heroscape, and such - couldn't think of a better name)

Others

11. Superheroes (though only recently)
12. Racing perhaps

Cthulhu/Lovecraft,for sure.

But I'm not sure what you are looking for. Do you have a set of mechanics looking for a theme or planning on starting from a theme?

Is that public domain?

I'm not designing a game. No way. I'm looking for popular themes for games that I've overlooked.

I believe the Cthulhu myths is public domain. That's why there is a glut of Cthulhu based games.

1. Using a worker to grab a single grain, but making the task last an entire work day.

2. Having trains blatantly describe how important some cities are versus others.

3. Manipulating regular joes in war for the sake of victory points regardless of consequence.

4. Tossing things down a watchtower's ladder repeatedly for unexpected results.

5. Guys on boats exchanging cubes of varying colors.

6. Thinking about Europe, but only in the past.

7. Movie monsters not getting along with anyone at all.

8. Treasure hunting in places no-one would ever keep their treasure.

9. Being in outer space and rarely ever having to worry about breathing.

10. Being lazy and stealing a dead writer's ridiculous creature-god to inject into everything.

Might as well do "Mythology" and cover your bases with Egypt, Norse, Greek, etc games.

I though this was a list of greatest themes.

I don't think zombies and Cthulhu should be anywhere near that list. At this point, if the game has one of these overused themes, I won't even look at it.

That's an interesting question and I have to admit I initially mis-read it as the ten greatest 'trends' in modern boardgaming. So my thoughts went straight to:

* worker placement
* resource management
* tile placement
* thematic overlay
* miniatures
* meeples
* game expansions
etc

I then re-read the question properly!

In terms of 'themes' the only one that sprang to my mind that you seem to have missed is the Steampunk/space pirates theme. That is quite distinct from the historic pirate genre.

Thought of another one: dystopias.

Being serious for a moment, "Cthulhu", as implemented in board games isn't a theme any more than, say, Godzilla; it's a well-known public domain monster shoved into games as a baddie for the heroes to beat up. Mansions of Madness, for instance, is basically Scooby Doo; that the janitor turns out to be Nyarlathotep doesn't change that, and doesn't make it "Lovecraftian". Indeed, with the possible exception of A Study in Emerald, not one of the plethora of boardgames employing elements of the Cthulhu mythos actually owes anything HPL's literary themes.

Being less serious, I realise that I should instead have been looking at BGG's "Thematic Games" which suggests the following:

1) Goblins and wizards
2) Goblins and wizards
3) Goblins and wizards
4) Soap opera and robots
5) Goblins and wizards
6) Robinson Crusoe
7) Dune
8) Wargaming
9) Football
10) Goblins and wizards
