Those rules are made to change the goal of the game. All the other rules are still in use. Originally, you had to walk down the labyrinth, find Black Gate, destroy it and voila, game over. To level up, you had to walk out the dungeon. Now, you have to complete a number of the quests to be able to reach Black Gate. But in return, you can level up faster, during your journeys.
You will need all the sheets and tables mentioned here at the Files section ("Quests tables").
1 Leveling up
Add “Level” to your character sheets. Each character can get another level if s/he will gather enough experience and gold. When character gathers enough of both, you can pay them to raise one of the stats.
Level 1 – 20 Experience, 100 gold
Level 2 – 30 Experience, 150 gold
Level 3 – 40 Experience, 200 gold
Level 4 – 50 Experience, 300 gold
Level 5 – 60 Experience, 400 gold
To increase character’s Wound Points max number, you need to pay 10 more experience and 50 more gold.
Every time character gains a level, all his wounds are healed and number of used spells is again at max.
Party needs to complete a number of the quests – only after them it will be able to seek for Black Gate. You can decide for yourself, how many quests you have to make – 2-3 will make game faster, 6-8 will make quite long. If you want to leave it to the fate, roll D6 and add 2 to the result. This will determine the number of the quests party has to finish. So, if you will roll 4, it means that you have to finish 6 quests.
Each quest has its own goal. Sometimes this means bringing some magical item, sometimes to defeat certain number of monsters or boss, sometimes – to bring a number of gold. Magical items, weapons or gold used to finish the quest are disappearing. Enemies killed to finish the quest aren’t giving anything to the characters.
Check out “Quests” table to determine, what you will need to find. Example:
Player rolls 3 and 5. This means party has to bring and sacrifice 200 gold.
Because every quests goes on in different place, every time you leave the dungeon, gather all the counters and mix them together. Use “Quest sheet” to make it easier to remember all the details of the quest you’re currently trying to do.
Sometimes you simply need to kill certain number of the enemies or get a number of gold or items to reach the quest. But sometimes you have to kill the boss. To determine, where you will have to battle them, use the boss location table and boss table. Remember to note everything on your quest sheet. Boss will be waiting in the final location. Bosses are resident monsters (not wandering ones).
Player rolls 3 and 6 on the Quests goals table. This means he needs to defeat the boss. He rolls then 1 and 2 on Boss location table. This means he will have to fight the boss in the second location of the second level. Finally, he checks what kind of boss he will have to fight. He rolls 2 and 3, so it means he will encounter 8 skeletons.
3. Black Gate
After finishing the last quest, party may start final mission - to find Black Gate and destroy it. Party enters the dungeon and instantly moves on the third level. Use first mirror that party will find to determine how far from it Black Gate is. After destroying Black Gate, party wins.
