First of all: I bought this game purposedly for solo playing. I'm trying to go through all scenarios in order. At my previous run at Omaha i barely survived so this time i was a bit scared of the increasing difficulty of scenarios.
That said...this was a surprisingly easy run.
I started at sector 2 and stock on some troops and specialists before moving forward to sector 4 and sideways to 3.
By then i had both the Scout and Sharpshooter as well as a Chaplain and a Beachmaster so i decided to go straight to sector 6 in the center under the machineguns. After buying a whistle i decided i had enough courage to brave the beachhead so i decided to invest some of it in a random Award. I got lucky getting Legion of Merit and getting to draw a random vehicle witch turned to be an Armoured Car which helped up stocking even more specialists.
Unexpectedly i kept rolling 5s under the machinegun fire at sector 6 so i had to rush out before i got decimated. Taking advantadge of the beachmaster i decided to rush past through sector 8 and directly onto sector 11. (i couldn't go into 10 or 12 due to the armoured car not crossing minefields).
Sector 11 was where the game was decided. I decided to break through with a well timed grenade to avoid the first machine gun fire (didn't want to repeat the previous massacre at sector 6)plus the bonus for scoring 4 equal results here helped me endure the full 3 turns here and netted me a Dead Man's Gift (Bangalore Torpedo Ahoy!!) and a lot of soldiers to endure the last sectors.
Sector 14 was torpedoed while the Decoy sacrificed himself to protect my brave Chaplain (wich was gaining me Courage like his life depended on that).
With almost 70 soldiers at the doors and a whistle and bible to avoid me of spending courage, there wasn't anything left for the bunker defenders to do. The armoured car was left outside while my brave men stormed the bunker to grant me an easy win.
21st MECHANIZED LEGION "The Preachers"
"LEGION OF MERIT"
Last Sector (14) 140VP
Survivors 49VP Soldiers + 24VP (8 Specialists)
10 Courage = 20 VP
10 VP "Legion of Merit" Award
Overall i must say the Chaplain and the really good decisions i made on sector 11 dice rolls where the main responsibles of the final result.
Forward to Gold Beach!
A great session and good decision making at critical times!
How you could build up to 70 soldiers is what escapes me...!
From the moment you move on, you keep losing about 10-15 every single round where double-RWB soldiers can give you 12 if you happen to roll these every turn !
Am I missing something ?!
Thanks for lighting my bangalore fire :-)
Weirdly enough, I read this and thought the same as the guy above. How the hell did you get to 70 men in the final assault?
Well, inspired by your game, I decided to give it a go. Bear in mind that I haven't played this game a lot (maybe 8 games at best), so my game play is slow deliberately. But, lo and behold, I reached sector 14 with 70 guys in tow. For me, what won it was early collection of powerful specialists....plus my first roll was an award, which came up as the pick a vehicle award. I got the tank! That meant in the early sectors damage was very low and I could really build on that. Plus a double RWB of fresh troops helped enormously.
So, all in all, I finished the mission with 271pts, so not far off yours. They key was gaining the chaplain early and. Of course, my tank.
Thanks for inspiring me to succeed!
