Just curious, is there an expansion in the works possibly for Dominant Species? It seems like there is potential to expand the game with additional domination cards and maybe an additional animal type or two. I didn't see anything about it one way or another so I figured I'd ask.

I'd love a deck of alternative, less powerful Domination cards.
About animals, however, I don't see how could this work: there are already 6 huge animal classes, what other classes could be added?

Fish? Virus? Crustacean? Mollusk? Nematode? We've barely scratched the surface as far as that goes.

Well I did say "maybe" on a new animal type. There's not much mechanically stopping the game from having a new animal but it would involve figuring out how they fit in a modified food chain and what elements they should start with. (Hmm, an animal that starts with one permanent element of its choice instead of two preset permanent elements might be interesting....)

Thematically the new animal could be either a subtype of an existing animal or something new entirely. One unusual possibility that comes to mind wouldn't even be an animal, it would be Plants. Plants evolve and spread just like animals do, and they work or sometimes compete with animals too. I could potentially see for example a Plant player who is at the very bottom of the food chain below insects. Give them a plant-like special ability and you're good!

Ooh, virus sounds interesting too.

This is (in my book) one of those great great games, that don't need any expansion.

Really.

It's just so damn good as is, I would not want to ruin it by needlessly putting more stuff in.

This, totally.

I don't want another Puerto Rico case.

Absolutely agreed. Although an alternative domination deck could be good. Power grid did the same. It would've an easy way to change the game without unbalancing the awesomeness that is already there.

Obviously nobody wants a broken expansion. That doesn't mean there's not room for a good expansion if the designer worked one out though. Just because it ain't broke doesn't mean it can't be expanded on.

1. Chits/Dice, in each of the 6 colors, to mark dominance on the board.

2. New Cards

No to new animals.

It comes with cones for that purpose already.

Sorry, I meant to mark the actual total dominance each player has on a tile. Meaning elements on tile x element on player board total.

I agree that figuring dominance can be a pain, but it's chiefly so when a tile has several animals competing for it already. This solution would tend to increase the clutter in an already-crowded hex. I don't think I'd use it.

I've heard favourable reports from people using small, coloured 6-sided dice in place of some of their species cubes and using them to track dominance, so it's not a terrible idea to have some sort of dedicated marker - it depends on whether you find you're spending more time on recalculating unchanged dominance than you'd spend recalculating dominance each time it changed
