If I've got a spare hour in the evening I'd like to fill it with a game. The criteria: maybe (but not necessarily) more than just some cards, sets up with minimum of fuss and is interesting enough so as not to just be a puzzle with a thin theme. I enjoy Sentinels of the Multiverse, Space Hulk: Death Angel – The Card Game and Ghost Stories but the latter takes too long to set up for what I'm after here.

Thanks!

I don't know if it's your cup of tea, but Pandemic could work for you.

2 solitaire card games:

Friday is cool with a nice blending of theme and deck-building, and it doesn't take too long to set up.

Onirim is quite quick to set up, though its theme might be a bit too surreal/abstract for you.

Hi Stuart. I recently started playing Peloponnes solo and think it works very well. The solo game plays out in a sort of campaign mode over five games (if you make it that far). Each level gets a little harder and more challenging. The theme may be on the light side for you though. But setup is rather easy and a single round can be played in 20 or so minutes.

Thanks guys, I'll give all of your recommendations a look.

I already have K2, great suggestion; I totally forgot to mention it.

What's the set-up time like with Pandemic?

I'll echo some of these others: Friday. It's one of the best solo experiences I've ever had.

I was going to say Friday as well. Setup is super quick, game goes by quickly, but is still interesting to play.

There are some games with solitaire variants that are similarly quick to set up and play on this geeklist: Lonesome Journey - How I Turned My Entire Collection Into A Solitaire Smorgasbord.

Not long.

There's a little bit of prep to do of the player deck (shuffling in the right number of Event cards, then dealing the right number of cards to each 'player', then splitting into piles and shuffling one Epidemic card into each pile, and recombining into one stack, smallest pile at the bottom and increasing in size towards the top), but, other than that, it's just a case of taking the components out of the box and putting them on the table/board, particularly if you get On The Brink, as that gives you Petry Dishes to keep the Disease Cubes in (oh and, except for shuffling the Infection deck, and shuffling and dealing out roles (there may also be an additional step or two for the play variants, and/or if you have In The Lab (I don't have that, and haven't played any of the variants, yet, so I'm not sure))).

You can certainly go from game on shelf to game finish within an hour.

Pathfinder Adventure Card Game sets up decently fast and plays quickly solo.

For a suggestion that's not just cards, D-Day Dice is pretty good if you're into the theme.

Castle Panic can be played solo, very quickly, and unlike at higher player numbers can be quite challenging solo.

Thanks again, friends.

Pathfinder was already on my list, now joined by both Friday and D-Day Dice.

I would +1 to Friday

I'd also be tempted to add Space Alert, which I find a really fun solo game. But set up may be a bit long and the game definitely isn't for everyone.

A couple more of my favourite solo games
Rallyman (Quick set up, fun to play, very flexible on how long you can play for)
Urbion (I prefer this to Onirim)
Legendary: A Marvel Deck Building Game (set up can be a faff, and not sure it's only an hour)

Also own Pathfinder Adventure Card Game: Rise of the Runelords – Base Set but not yet played solo. Pandemic and Flash Point: Fire Rescue are good and should scrape under an hour. If you do go for Castle Panic, then I think Castle Panic: The Wizard's Tower is essential, but does extend the game a bit.

Dunno if they're too minimal, but I have a blast playing Urbion and Onirim. You could easily get 2-4 solo games in within an hour. I play them as filler when I really want to stretch my brain but don't have any other players or time.

Dungeon Roll is also a fun diversion and has quite a few "bits" but can be set-up in minutes. The solo game simply involves trying to beat your high score essentially, but it's a great quick solo experience as well.

If you are willing to give them a whirl, video games have zero set up time.
There are a lot of strategy pc games available, and games you can play in your browser that have very low system requirements to operate well.

I'll go out on a limb and recommend one that feels boardgamey to me.
You can play it on iOS or your browser.
