Io, Saturnalia!

Saturnalia: one of Rome’s most beloved holidays. For five days, slaves stand on equal footing with their masters, the people wear colorful clothing and funny hats, and everybody gambles and gets incredibly drunk all the time. No matter your wealth, power, or social standing, you can lose yourself in the confusion.

For five days, the King of Saturnalia, chosen by lot, has supreme authority over the proceedings. Not all are so lucky: some poor sap will die in gladiatorial combat as an offering to Saturn. But during Saturnalia, anything can happen.

And this is a very special Saturnalia. It’s 41 AD, and the emperor Caligula is growing increasingly insane and unpopular. There are rumors of an assassination plot helmed by Cassius Chaerea, a member of the emperor’s own Praetorian Guard. Many are sympathetic to Cassius’ cause, but there are still those who would protect the emperor.

Will you find a way to protect the emperor, or will you see him dead? Perhaps you’ll find yourself the King of Saturnalia...or killed in sacrifice. It all depends on how well you can navigate the haze of Saturnalia.

Note: This PBF will be a little more advanced than the last two. Although there won’t be any special homebrewed roles or rules, we’re going to be using some of the more interesting roles in the book: for starters, Hot Potato and Leprechaun. I’m willing to take suggestions on what, exactly, we do use...although, of course, it’ll all depend on how many people play!

Round 1 will begin on Sunday, September 6 at 11:00 BGG (CST), right around dinner time in Rome. That seems to be the most accomodating time for Aussies, Americans, and Europeans.

Re: 2R1B PBF #40 - UNDER CONSTRUCTION
Introduction

Two Rooms and a Boom is a social deduction, hidden role game. There are two teams, the Red Team and the Blue Team. The Blue Team has a President. The Red Team has a Bomber. Players are equally distributed between two rooms (separate playing areas). The game consists of 5 timed rounds. At the end of each round, some players will be traded into opposing rooms. If the Red Team’s Bomber is in the same room as the Blue Team's President at the end of the game, then the Red Team wins. Otherwise the Blue Team wins.

PBF Rules

At the start of the game, the moderator will create two different "room" threads (labeled something like "PBF#1 - The Bunker - Round 1" and "PBF#1 - The Command Post - Round 1") and a "main" thread (this one) in which the mod posts all of the "commands" during the game (like, "Jimmy Dean moves from The Bunker to the Command Post"). The mod then randomly assigns all players to the two rooms and deals out randomly their roles via private message. The mod then begins the first round by posting something like: ROUND 1 WILL END 24 HOURS FROM NOW

Each round is a day. All players assigned into a room MUST NOT look at the other room's thread as that is CHEATING. They may only read and post in their assigned room. Over the course of the round, each room's leader will select a number of hostages (round and player count dependent) to transfer to the other room. If a leader does not submit a person to switch within the time limit, the mod will select hostages randomly from that room and move them.

After the mod has moved the players, two new threads for the next round will be created. Players may look back at any "old" rooms THEY WERE IN until the game is finished.

Electing a Leader

To elect a Leader for a room, players vote for any player in their room. They do this by bolding "Vote for Alex". Once a player has enough votes equal to more than half the number of players in the room (a majority), that player is the Leader.

A Leader remains the leader of a room until:
• The Leader leaves the room. If the Leader chooses to leave the room, then they must choose someone else to be the new Leader for that room.
• A re-vote occurs and a new player receives the majority of the votes.

If a leader cannot be decided by majority votes, then at the end of the round, the player with the most votes becomes the leader. If there is a tie, the player with the longest held last vote becomes the leader.

Revealing

During the course of the game, players can do what is called a "co-reveal" or a "color-reveal". If you co-reveal with a player, you reveal to them your role and they reveal to you their role. If players wish to do a co-reveal, they must publicly state in their room's thread, "I wish to do a co-reveal with Jesse." "Jesse" must then also say, "I wish to do a co-reveal with Alex." After both players have "locked in" their wish to co-reveal via bolding, they are FORCED to divulge their role card with the other player (ie, you can't back out if you realize you're about to reveal to a player on the other team). If they wish to do a color-reveal, it is the same type of situation, except that you only share the color of your card (red, blue, gray, purple, or green). There must be 10 players playing before color-reveals are allowed.

What if a player wishes to back out of a reveal prior to the actual reveal? Let's say A puts in bold that they wish to reveal with B. Prior to B putting in bold that they will reveal with A, A can back out of the reveal by putting in another message, in bold, saying they no longer wish to reveal. Once B puts in their reveal orders, however, the reveal is required by both parties, regardless of whether they wanted to reveal or not. No cheating! The mod WILL intervene if required (but would rather you sort it out yourself).

Players are also allowed to simply show another player their color or role if they'd like. To do this, a player would publicly state and bold in his room's thread, "I show Jesse my color" or "Private Reveal Jesse."

Likewise, you can publicly reveal your role to the room, by bolding your color or role and announcing it in the room's thread (i.e., "I am red."). If it's bold, you cannot lie.

To summarize, we have:

• Offer [color/co-reveal] to Jesse - to propose a color or co-reveal to player
• Accept [color/co-reveal] from Jesse - to accept a color or co-reveal from player
• Revoke [color/co-reveal] offer to Jesse - to cancel a previous color or co-reveal offer to player
• Private reveal [color/role] to Jesse - share role/color with player
• I am [color/role] - share color/role with room

Private Messaging

Private messaging will be allowed this game. Private messages must be:

• Announced in the public thread who you whispered to, via a bolded action, "Whisper to Jesse"
• You are allowed to whisper to multiple people at once for one action. "Whisper to Jesse, Julius, Mark."
• There's still no limit on private messages (whispers) you can send, but try to keep whispers close to five per round or 25/game (it's not a hard limit, but it makes the game a little more challenging and mimics the time limit you might otherwise feel in a real-life game).

SPECIAL NOTE ON ENCODING WHISPERS:

Because spectators and future geeks browsing the forums may want to see what was said during those whisper exchanges (it makes the game more interesting), you may consider posting your messages in a
Spoiler (click to reveal)
Spoiler

and use a cypher like that found on the rot13 website (www.rot13.com) to keep people from accidentally reading the message. To use the encoder, just type in whatever message you would like to whisper, hit CYPHER, and post the encoded text in your spoiler. Whoever receives the whisper should then copy the encoded text, paste it back into the rot13 encoder/decoder, and hit CYPHER.

NOTE: DO NOT READ MESSAGES MEANT FOR OTHER PEOPLE, especially those from opposing team members. THIS IS CHEATING. You are welcome to go back after the game is over and read what people posted.

Second-In-Command: To prevent random transfers from occurring during the game (because of the flavor of this game, decisions CANNOT be made after the deadline), room leaders are HIGHLY encouraged to appoint a SIC and inform both that player and the moderator, so that said player may also submit hostage transfer orders and next round leader appointment to the moderator.

Random transfers avoided whenever possible: I will post in your room 1.5 hours before end of round if orders have not been received by the projected/current leader. I also reserve the right to delay rounds by up to half an hour if I have not received orders by the deadline. However, DO NOT count on this half hour grace period. ALWAYS put your orders in before the deadline and use a 2nd-in-command.

Accepted co-reveal cancels all outstanding offers: Any acceptance of a co-reveal offer automatically cancels all outstanding color and/or co-reveal offers from both players involved in the co-reveal.

Re: 2R1B PBF #40 - UNDER CONSTRUCTION
Roleset

Emperor Caligula, aka the President - Between bedding your underlings' wives, ordering the legions to collect seashells, and appointing your favorite horse as consul, you are not a very popular man. Watch your back. The Blue Team wins if you do not gain the "dead" condition.

The Concubine, aka the Blue Identity Thief - Years of dealing with the erratic and egotistical Caligula have given you great knowledge of how to manipulate a man. Any player that co-reveals with you trades cards with you and then acquires the "shy" condition; that player assumes the allegiance of the Identity Thief card. You, however, assume the powers, allegiance, and all starting conditions of the newly stolen card.

The Alchemist, aka the Blue Mad Scientist - As an alchemist employed by Caligula, you have gained knowledge of strange arts, and potions that have the power to affect the mind itself. Once per game, you may whisper to two players and say to them, “I am the Alchemist. You MUST trade cards.” Those two players must trade character cards. You can NOT use this power on yourself, but the Egalitarian can use her power on you. Remember, newly acquired characters are cleansed.

The Watchman, aka the Blue Negotiator - "Who goes there? Speak the password." You may only co-reveal. You may not privately reveal, publicly reveal, or color reveal.

The Toadie, aka the Blue Spy - You've made your way to power by systematically squealing on anyone who you overhear saying anything bad about Caligula, and you see no reason to stop now. Your card is red, but your allegiance is with the Blue Team.

The Aedile, aka the Blue Werewolf - A public official under Caligula, you've been given the power and responsibility of enforcing order among the people. Any player that co-reveals with you gains the “compromised” condition. Any player that co-reveals with a “compromised” player is then also “compromised.” If you publicly reveal your card, all “compromised” characters must also publicly reveal their cards.

Cassius Chaerea, aka the Bomber - You've had enough of the emperor's madness and abuse, and you're not the only one. Everyone in the same room as you at the end of the game gains the "dead" condition. The Red Team wins if the Emperor gains the "dead" condition.

The Impersonator, aka the Red Identity Thief - Your ability to take on the identify of another has proven you a valuable asset to the conspiracy. Any player that co-reveals with you trades cards with you and then acquires the "shy" condition; that player assumes the allegiance of the Identity Thief card. You, however, assume the powers, allegiance, and all starting conditions of the newly stolen card.

The Egalitarian, aka the Red Mad Scientist - During Saturnalia, the master becomes the servant, and the servant becomes the master. You enjoy making people swap places. Once per game, you may whisper to two players and say to them "I am the Egalitarian. You MUST trade cards.” Those two players must trade character cards. You can NOT use this power on yourself, but the Alchemist can use her power on you. Remember, newly acquired characters are cleansed.

The Senator, aka the Red Negotiator - Although you support the conspiracy, your high rank and visibility make you cautious about disclosing your allegiance. You may only co-reveal. You may not privately reveal, publicly reveal, or color reveal.

The Traitor, aka the Red Spy - As a member of Caligula's personal guard, nobody suspects your complicity in the plot against him. Your card is blue, but your allegiance is with the Red Team.

The Proprietor, aka the Red Werewolf - The owner of one of Rome's many wine bars, you have many ways of getting influence over your customers. Any player that co-reveals with you gains the “compromised” condition. Any player that co-reveals with a “compromised” player is then also “compromised.” If you publicly reveal your card, all “compromised” characters must also publicly reveal their cards.

The King of Saturnalia, aka the Leprechaun - As long as you're the King of Saturnalia, you can do whatever you want, but it's easy to get drunk and foolish with your power. Any player that co-reveals or even color-reveals with you immediately trades cards with you. You begin with the "foolish" condition. Players with the "foolish" condition can never turn down an offer to co-reveal. At the end of the game, the King of Saturnalia wins.

Note: No player, including the starting player, may be the King of Saturnalia more than once. This means that if you have previously been the King of Saturnalia and later co-reveal with the King of Saturnalia, you do not switch cards.

The Gladiator, aka the Hot Potato - Normally, you'd be worried about facing your death in combat, but given how drunk everyone around you is, you think you might be able to persuade someone to take your place. Any player that co-reveals or even color-reveals with you immediately trades cards with you. At the end of the game, the Gladiator loses.

The Goon, aka the Seeker - You have a talent for tracking down the most slippery scoundrels in Rome. And once they meet you, they find a remarkable amount of motivation to pay their debts. At the end of the last round, you name a player in the game. If that player is the Libertine, you win.

The Libertine, aka the Mystery Man - Your weaknesses for wine and womanizing have left you in debt to the wrong sort of people, but you're confident that your charm and wit will help you escape your creditors. You win if the Goon does not name you at the end of the game

The Bacchant, aka the Drunk - You've always appreciated the taste of a fine Falernian. Or, really, any wine at all. Praise Dionysus! Before characters cards are dealt but after they are shuffled, randomly remove a character card. This is the “sober” character card. The Bacchant card is then placed into the deck of character cards. Reshuffle the character cards. At the beginning of the last round of the game, the Bacchant player should replace their Bacchant card with the “sober” card. The player assumes all powers and responsibilities associated with the “sober” character card.

Clarifications

The key rule to remember is that when you get a new card, it is clean of all conditions. Well, unless your new card is the Leprechaun, in which case you're "foolish".

What does this mean? Well, suppose you're Bob, the Bomber, and you co-reveal with Illan, the Red Identity Thief. You are now the "shy" Identity Thief and Illan is the Bomber. Now, if Margaret, the Red Mad Scientist, forces you to switch cards, you will be the Bomber again and Illan will be the Red Identity Thief, and neither of you will be shy.

Other things you might be confused about:

Mad Scientist

1. Mad Scientist works via whisper. If I want Alice and Bob to trade, I will whisper Alice and say "I am the Alchemist. You MUST trade cards with Bob." and vice versa to Bob. This means that you have to TELL THE MOD when you use your power, otherwise I have no way of knowing that you actually switched them. The two whispers must appear in the same post. Outside observers have no way of knowing for sure that the power was used.

2. Shyness does not make you immune to Mad Scientist.

3. Mad Scientist takes precedence over the one-time-Leprechaun rule; i.e., if you are forced to trade cards with the Leprechaun, you will go through with it whether or not you've been the Leprechaun before.

4. If a person receives the Mad Scientist card mid-way through the game, they may use the card's power whether or not it has already been used. They might not even know if the card's power has been used!

Werewolf

1. Werewolf works via public reveal. When either the Aedile or the Proprietor public reveals, all "compromised" ("bitten") players must public reveal at the top of their next post. Like Agent, you're on your honor not to avoid posting so as not to public reveal. Players who must public reveal and fail to will have their roles outed at the end of the round, and the leader will be given a chance to adjust orders.

2. The "compromised" condition doesn't care where it came from. For instance, if you are "compromised" by the Aedile, you still have to public reveal when the Proprietor public reveals. This remains true even if the Aedile loses his card. Of course, if you lose your card, you will lose the "compromised" condition as well.

Leprechaun

1. If you are offered a co-reveal, you must accept it at the top of your next post. Like Agent, you're on your honor not to avoid posting so as not to co-reveal. If you must co-reveal and fail to do so, the co-reveal will be automatically completed for you at the end of the round.

2. The one-time Leprechaun rule takes precedence over the Hot Potato; i.e., if the Alice, the Hot Potato, switches with Bob, the Leprechaun (assuming Alice hasn't been the Leprechaun before), Bob can't switch back.

The Results

Machiavellian (Cassius Chaerea, aka Bomber) assassinates GirAltSupr (Emperor Caligula, aka President) on the steps of the Imperial Palace. Red team wins! Blue team loses.

shawnad2006 (Goon, aka Seeker) tracks down longlivesquare (Libertine, aka Mystery Man) and breaks his knees. shawnad2006 wins, longlivesquare loses.

mfl134 (King of Saturnalia, aka Leprechaun) is celebrated by the people of Rome. mfl134 wins!

namyzarc (Gladiator, aka Hot Potato) is eaten by a lion, which is a pretty cool way to go. Still, namyzarc loses.

In.

Hey, wait a sec... are you saying Shawna and my modded games were "rudimentary"? I prefer the term "user friendly"!

Just want to make sure I understand Drunk -

They start the game as purple, don't know which team they're on or what their win condition is, and then in R5 is told what team they are on and what their win condition is, but don't have to guess it like Amnesiac does?

They basically get the buried role, at the start of Round 5. If it comes with powers, they get to use them.

(Would suck if it's Hot Potato.)

Can VIP be buried?

It also sucks if its something that is useful early (spy, agent, enforcer) that your team loses during the whole game.

Also, I love the theme, Red. I think about Rome a lot. And I mean a LOT.

Yes, anything could be buried. It's the "Sober" card, technically.

If it's Hot Potato, the Drunk would be wise to make use of the Leprechaun.
