I don't know if people knew that Morgan Spurlock (director of Supersize Me) did an episode of 30 Days (his TV show that was on for a few years) where Spurlock lived on a Navajo reservation for 30 Days, and got to know about the Dine and their culture. It was season three of the show, episode title "Life On An Indian Reservation." I am sure there are better documentaries out there, but this is the only thing I saw--because I playtested the game I knew the places they talked about, and other things.

This semester for my developmental writing students I had them read Sherman Alexie's "The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian," had them watch Spurlock's episode, and had them watch REEL INJUN: On The Trail of the Hollywood Indian. Students loved reading the book and learning about Native American culture. Even though here in Minnesota we have a lot of reservations, about the only thing my students really know about Native Americans is the fact they own the casinos and that's it.

That's truly a shame, but considering modern times (e.g., we're constantly bombarded with Indian Gaming Casino TV commercials where I live) not really surprising at all.

Didn't know about Spurlock's thing. I've watched REEL INJUN.

Given your other readings/watchings... if you haven't read it, you might be interested in Rez Life by David Treuer. I thought it was very interesting. The author is an Ojibwe ("Chippewa") from his mother's side (and his dad a Jewish survivor of the Holocaust).

Sherman Alexie is awesome. More people should read his books.
