Hey BGGers,

Auction games. Is Vegas Showdown worth it if you have Ra and Suburbia?

I have Ra (more pure auction) and Suburbia (auction/city building), but I'm thinking about adding Vegas Showdown (auction/casino building).

What do you think? Is the puzzle aspect of Vegas Showdown, placing the rooms in the casino so they fit and the doors match enough different to make it worth it? Or is the component quality sub-par enough that I should stick with Ra and Suburbia?

Thoughts?

Thanks!

Lee

I'm not sure I would consider them at all close in terms of game style. True, Vegas Showdown has an auction style element to it, but I think it is more about the building than anything else. Ra is purely about managing an auction to obtain points. At least, I consider them as scratching completely different itches for me, and own both (well, technically Priests of Ra, but that is more or less the same thing).

Ra is Ra. There is no substitute there.

Suburbia does feel a bit like Vegas Showdown. Nothing wrong with Vegas Showdown, but Suburbia is the better game. I personally don't feel a lot of draw to go back to VS, although I own it and my kids loved it.

I own both Suburbia and Vegas Showdown, and am glad I do. Vegas Showdown is a bit lighter, and it can be easier getting it to the table with certain game groups. Game play is also quite different, in my opinion.

To me, Vegas Showdown is a much superior auction game to Suburbia (which I don't really think of as an auction game at all) and a much more fleshed out one than Ra, but I don't feel that the puzzle aspect is significantly better than that of Suburbia.

I feel that Princes of Florence and Amun Re are the games that would obviate the need for Vegas Showdown moreso than would Ra or Suburbia.

Love Vegas Showdown. Great theme. I think Vegas is lighter than Suburbia. Only played Suburbia once. Didn't connect with me. I love Ra. Stand's on it's own.

My rankings.

1. Ra
2. Vegas Showdown
3. Suburbia

I own the first two. No plans to get the third.

Just to clear the air: Suburbia is not an auction game. There are no auctions throughout the entire game.

There are people who make the same claim about all three games. I've given up on agreeing about such things in strict terms. They all have a degree of "auctionness" to them. Suburbia's feels a bit like a reverse auction. But I agree it's a stretch, and if I had to rank their auctionness, Suburbia would be lowest. But I'd rank Vegas Showdown lowest on creativity, which is I guess why it doesn't have much staying power with me (I own all three).
