I'm away from home and have found boardgames as my hobby by accident and it is seriously addictive! Questions remain when I am back though...

Are there shops in Auckland to buy or visit? If buying from internet shops, what is the address? Not TM....

I am sure most of kiwis found out that the prices of games are somewhat ridiculously high compare to states. Any comments on this? Is it just because of the usual suspects like small market, stupid GST rate and such?

Last but not least, how big is the boardgames in NZ? Is there annual event holding? Perhaps approx number of gamers?

Sorry if all these have been discussed before but please share the info and love to hear them all!!

There are many shops to choose from in Auckland, these are the ones I pop into from time to time:
King of Cards, CBD
Heroes for Sale, K'Rd
Mainly Toys, MT Eden

Check the distributors website for a longer list www.pixelpark.co.nz also sign up for their newsletters to find out what has just arrived in the country.

Webshops

www.seriouslyboard.co.nz
www.mightape.co.nz
and theres a new one which I can't remember the name of thats advertising on BGG.

NZ Board Game prices, the result of living in a small country that doesn't have an economy of scale to allow larger import quantities, thus pushing up the price of shipping per unit. There is a really interesting thread from a few years ago on this topic in this forum, I've got the link at home (will post later). Tim at Pixelpark joined in the discussion from his point of view.

Events

Board games by the Bay http://boardgamesbythebay.org.nz/ next event is November in Auckland, run by SeriouslyBoard

Battlecry is in Febuary at the ASB Stadium, run by the universities AMERICA club.

There are a few others around the country others can point you to.

Do I assume you have already found one of the board game clubs here in Auckland, there are about half a dozen.

I recommend subscribing to the New Zealand forum, it is a very active community. You will get posts about BGBTB & Battlecry.

I'd write way more but am at work and arvo break only lasts a short bit.

I'm not sure who they are but http://www.nzgameshop.com/ has some good specials, but I would say that Seriouslyboard offers more to the NZ BGG community - and often has very competitive prices too; which with the issues you note above such as GST, small market etc is even more impressive.

Nzgameshop is a british based company, cheaper prices, longer wait. Each item is sent individually so you can be waiting days for different items from the same order to arrive.

I haven't had any problems with any orders yet, but I'd assume dealing with a nz based trader would be a lot easier if things did get cocked up.

Thanks a lot for the info! Indeed I have tried searching and the thread is 'Boardgame retail in NZ: A bit of a rant' I believe this is the thread you'd want to show me?

After I got into this hobby, I wasn't sure it would be big enough in NZ for me to enjoy but surely ppl here and there are all same DD

Even after reading the discussion, I still can't fully agree with the pricing but much better in understanding.

can't wait to check out FLGS or OLGS!!

I don't remember all that much that was written on the thread, but I think given the relatively small size of the NZ market the pricing is fine. The US pricing seems honestly quite ridiculously cheap at times and trying to compare with that would be very unfair.

I think the board-gaming scene is pretty good in NZ, and appears to be gaining strength. The hardest thing it times is connecting people up and knowing who out there also plays games. I recently ran into someone in Chch who plays games most weeks with other couples (games like Agricola and Puerto Rico were mentioned, so not just gateway games) but as far as I know they are not part of the boardgaming scene in Christchurch.

Board-gaming is definitely worth getting into here in NZ. In my experience most games that are talked about on BGG will be possible to play in Christchurch (the odd obscure title might be an exception), so I would have thought that your chances in Auckland should be even better to see and play almost any game that is worth playing.

Try meetup.com Auckland Board Gamers. There is quite a good representation of most of the regular groups, plus some one off events and more specialised games nights (Axis and Allies, prototypes, Netrunner, etc.).

Regarding boardgame prices, you can sometimes get a good deal on www.trademe.co.nz. Although, quite often, titles that are going cheap will be cheap for a reason. In NZ, you just have to research games a lot more before buying, rather than building up a huge random collection of mediocre games (although I do envy those with huge random collections of totally excellent games!)

There are a lot of clubs and groups doing regular board game meet ups each month now too.

King of Cards has board games every Sunday from 10am to 4pm and they have a library of games people can use in the store. They also run a After Dark evening on Mondays which include a lot of LCG like Game of Thrones, Netrunner and the Star Wars games.

The America club runs a weekly Wed night board games group at Auckland Uni campus from 7pm to 10pmish. It's held in the Commerce A building on campus mostly. They have a Facebook group for notices.

The Auckland German Board Game Group meets every other Tuesday evening.

The BattleCry group runs a monthly board games day on the 2nd Sunday of the month also at the Auckland Uni campus. They advertise their events via Facebook and their website. Plus their annual convention in February. 15/16th Feb 2014 is the next one.

The Auckland SciFi group which uses Meetup has a monthly board games gathering. Not sure which Sunday they use but they were meeting in the Auckland Library.

The CityGuard have board games happening at their club from 1pm to 5pm Sundays at the Freeman's Bay Community Hall.

The Club Out West (T.C.O.W) meets Sundays and also does board games and a lot of skirmish miniatures games like X-Wing and Wings of Glory.

Those are just what I can think of atm.

Hey Roy, it'd be great to see you at one of our Board Games By The Bay events! Our next one is in Auckland on the weekend of November 23-24.

We've yet to make the full announcement of our plans, but there'll be heaps of gaming, prizes, and discounts, and just the one Martin Wallace.

You can find more info at our BGG Guild or via the website.

Hope to see you there!

Can I quote you on this?

(Although I'm not sure if it comes across as "David sells board games" or "David is a pimp"... gulp )

Sorry Jody, I was trying to be funny. Should have put a smiley face. David is my favourite boardgame pimp! I have called upon his services many a time. He is, deservedly, very well recommended.

Both, for the Mt Albert Board Game Cub.

People's collection range from your size (or less) to hundreds. Just depends on the person. Some of us show our collection on BGG just click our names and then click collection, might give an idea regarding the more dedicated obsessed gamer.

Depends on the group of gamers you're playing with. We do a bit of both down here in Christchurch.

People often bring along games they'd like to try and some of the hosts' games regularly get played, as well. Sometimes games are setup in advance, as was the six player Battlestar Galactica game I participated in tonight, whilst others picked up games that took there fancy at the time.

This ended up being a handy thread. We're looking to move up to Ak sometime over the next year, so I'll push for a location near a regular game meet up
