This battle is part of the upcoming Blue Cross, White Ensign pack featuring the Russian Navy and it's wars against the Swedes and the Turks. This battle was the first Mediterranean battle between the Russians and the Turks.
For a historical brief, see
In our game, the Russians approached the tail of the anchored Turk fleet, with the Turks rotating at anchor to meet them. Once the approach was committed, it became apparent that the Russians intended to engage their entire line vs the tail of the Turk fleet, with the wind behind them.
The Turks reacted by slipping anchors for the front and centre squadrons to bring their numbers to bear. The initial volleys of the Turk rear did good work slowing the Russian vanguard, such that Europa became so slow she bore off and was overtaken.
However, the Russians were not to be denied, and such was the weight of shot and the closeness of the Russian attack, that the Turkish tail ship Seyf-I-Bahri was sorely hit.
The Turk riposte gathered momentum as the Turk ships got underway and hoisted more sail. The combination of the Russian approach and the Turk endeavours allowed the Turks to begin bearing down on the Russian centre and tail. Their approach resembled more a cavalry charge than a fleet, such was their haste to engage.
The Russian edinerogs (big guns firing explosive shells) began to engage the oncoming Turks, causing the Burc-I-Zufer to catch fire in her rigging. As she hove to to allow her compatriots to pass and to quell the flames, an errant spark must have drifted to the magazine, for she blew up violently.
Having withstood the fire of the Russian line, now it was the Turk moment. Aided by a fortuitous change of wind, and gaining the initiative, the Turks galloped through the Russian line, raking to the left and right. Here the Russians started taking some real Hull hurting, and soon a 4th Rate was damaged, and eventually caught fire and came down to 1 hull remaining. Along the rest of the line, the Turks had hit hard a Russian 1st rate (the Rostislav) and a final turn 8 shot got the single Hull hit needed to flip her to Damaged side.
So at end of Turn 8, the Turks had lost 1 3rd rate ship (exploded) and 1 3rd Rate damaged for 10VP, and the Russian had damaged a 1st & 4th Rate, for 8VP. Under the BCWE proposed rules, the Turk VP are multiplied by enemy Audacity +1, which would be 24VP.
We finish on Turn 8, but there was still some play in the scenario.
