My typical Essen envy this year seems a bit off. I can't seem to find a game that should be tickling my fancy. What am I missing or not seeing that should really be the gems of this year?

Nations -- Civ card game. Looks like 1/3 of the goodness of Through the Ages. Why should I get this?

Bremerhaven - I own La Havre, and I really didn't ask for a simplified version. So why should I buy this?

Francis Drake - YEWP...Worker placement. Do I need another one. Is there something that makes this unique. Does it have the Trajan "Mancala" effect. The same but different?

Madeira - YAWP....Yet Another Worker Placement?

Bruxelles 1893 - YAWP....Yet Another Worker Placement??

Lewis & Clark - YAWP....Yet Another Worker Placement???

Come on man, work with me!

Looks like it might be interesting, but just not enough information to really know what is going on in that game.

I don't know. It looks ugly to me. But a lot of people seem to be talking about it.

MWChapel wrote:

Because it's by Lookout Games, and theyy generally produce solid stuff. It looks like Le Havre, but doesn't play like Le Havre.

MWChapel wrote:

This one is admittedly a wildcard. Which is obviously purely by virtue of being by Eagle Games. But it looks nice, and fairly meaty, and early ratings are very positive. John Farrell's 9 rating after three plays (has rated over 1,100 games) was particularly eye-catching.

MWChapel wrote:
Packet Row - Sounds like another typical dry euro.

Yeah, probably too early to put this on a "get excited" list. It's a dark horse, and White Goblin hasn't been super consistent. I can't remember why/how this ended up on my list. I should move it to 2nd tier of stuff to check later.

MWChapel wrote:
Madeira - YAWP....Yet Another Worker Placement?

After Asgard (and to a lesser extent Vasco da Gama), the next What's Your Game? big box is an auto-buy. It doesn't hurt that the game looks fantastic (again, like Asgard and VdG). It was postponed from last year's Essen for more polish.

MWChapel wrote:

Pearl Games. Done. Unique art style doesn't hurt.

MWChapel wrote:
Lewis & Clark - YAWP....Yet Another Worker Placement???

Card-driven. Got good feedback at GenCon. Rules look decent. Non-overused theme. There's an actual winning condition other than most vp. But I'll probably need to read the rules in full first before deciding. New designer and publisher that I haven't played any games from.

MWChapel wrote:

There were other games in the list. Some aren't WP. But I don't relate to YAWP angst. Same for JASE. It seems almost like, "yet another map game" or "yet another cards game" or "yet another economic game" or "yet another train game" or "yet another dice game". A game to me is more than the broad category under which it falls. Or if not, it's not a very good game. For example the recently released (in the US) Yedo is squarely worker placement, but the mission system layers on a second reason workers might go to a spot, and since missions are hidden, you don't really know for sure why a player is playing on each spot. Dramatically reduces AP tendencies. I love it. Despite still questioning the balance.

Well, the vast majority of games are designed by a BGGer, so I'm not sure what that's really saying. (With notable exceptions like Knizia)

The art on that game looks nice, but it's way too text heavy for me.

In think out of your list, Francis Drake looks in my mind the most promising.

And also Condordia. It's a Gerdts(+) and it's a civ(+). So I hope it makes to to Essen this year. Been rather quiet.

In my defense, saying that Madeira is a worker placement game it's kind of saying that Through the Ages is a card game. Both statements are true but I would rather believe that once you play Madeira you will feel that it's a bit more than just that.

Please consider my judgement completely biased

I don't know. It looks a lot like Trajan. A mix of a bunch of different little ways to gain resources. And the only reason I like Trajan was because of the unique use of the mancala, otherwise it also looked and played like a typical bunch of different little ways to gain resources and vp's. None of them unique or interesting.

I'm looking for the games people believe will be a chart climber this year.

I see a lot of the sameness of years past, but I want something that people are not going to say "Well, it's a solid OK game" but "Now that is clever"

And yet from Madeira Preview - Part 1: The Dice we read:
darkpact wrote:
Madeira is a civilization game and it is an economic game, but from its heart it's a worker placement game.

But as I said above, I don't see that statement as requiring a defense.

Well, two observations:
1) Those are two very different things. Cleverness often is not rewarded with climbing the charts. And non-clever games often climb the charts. Um, hi Lords of Waterdeep! shake
2) It's really hard to predict which games will climb the charts. This is something that even Jay Tummelson of RGG has commented on multiple times as publisher.

Well, cleverness, or really good IP. I can live without the latter.

Yes, but why would new art for a 20 year old game be cause for excitement?

the game description does say it is intense ...

but other than that maybe Cornish Smuggler or the home made looking

Admiral's Order: Naval Tactics in the Age of Sail – Edition 74 would be my bet ...

There will be at least one more FF game: Futterneid. According to his "Freitag" blog it will be presented at thursday at 12, cause there the Friday in Fakofoa will start. He started an English designer diary already for BGG.
I think he will bring another game as well, oh and the mandatory new Power Grid map

Are you interested in games that are not presented on the fair but a few months old? I'd add Spyrium on the list then

Oh you're a grumpy lot aren't you?!

It's Essen. You should just get existed because. Just because. We don't need reasons! But if we must, what about Kohle & Kolonie (edit: damn, I just noticed Curt did list this one) or What's He Building in There? and Prosperity (edit, and this) to add to those above?

Francis Drake has me most excited though, and I'm keen to check out the new Rosenberg and Feld titles.

Oh and a few of those crazy Japon Brand titles.

7 edits for ipad-isms!!!
