First of all, the loot variant should be applied only to multiple groups using the same box. It can also apply to you if you are soloing multiple characters or going through the full game multiple times. Given this is the case, I am assuming that you are using the character sheets and thus do not need to have your decks constructed at all times.

Loot Variant: When you receive loot from a quest, mark it off with a star on your character sheet, but DO NOT replace another card with it. Keep your deck the way that it is.

Before each game, any character with a particular loot unlocked may put it into their deck (the group can decide as a whole which character this should be). One of their cards (of matching type of course) is temporarily replaced with the loot, though they put the card to the side and replace it back into their deck at the end of the round.

The total characters who can do this are obviously limited to the amount of loot the party has gained. By this I basically mean that if you are starting the next (unreleased) adventure, only one of you may have the amulet in your deck at a time.

The reason for this variant is that without it, whichever group reaches the loot first within your particular box will be the group who has access to the loot. With this variant, all characters with any particular loot unlocked may (if they wish) use it any time, even if they should decide to do a solo game.
