I just won War of 1812 on E-bay and I noticed that I have an older Columbia Games (1985 or so) version. My version does not contain the Cavalry block (nor the rules for Forched marching and the rules for capturing Naval Units and rolling a 1-3 to capture them or 4-6 for an escape). It's just all Infantry and the Indian (red block like the British). Of course, it's easy to make one Cavalry block, but is the game better with or without the Cavalry?

Not that I've played without, but the dragoon has never made a noticable difference than if it had been an infantry in any of my games.

And if you never have, you should. These things are fun and fun is good.

The cavalry can make a difference in that it can move and retreat 2 towns. This can be very big in the end game if you are trying to capture town points. The double pursuit fire is huge as well.
