something tells me that whomever does log in is looking for something offensive. The ad is offensive but I imagine for a certain demographic (ie, 14-18 year old boys) its very targeted.

What is puzzling is why you would see it in the first place. The company doing the advertising should be setting up their adsense campaigns to target males only of unknown age only (you can't specifically target 13-17 demographic).

Haven't seen the ad (which sounds offensive), but I'm always mystified by businesses that actively try to shoo some segment of the population away from buying their product. Really, you don't want my money? Well, all right then.

I can only suppose that they think the cachet they'll gain from excluding one group will elevate them so much in the eyes of their target group that they'll make up the lost sales. A questionable proposition, for sure.

That ad campaign is very aggressive and spammy. I have had to block several URLs on my own website so that the ad doesn't show up... then... a few days later, there's a new one.

It is very irritating and, yes, offensive.

Yeah, my bet is it's offensive on purpose to try to attract young proto-dudebros dumb enough to fall for its scams. Kind of sad if that strategy works. But take some comfort: I don't think it will.

I worked at a software company with a joint venture in the US. During a teleconference, we mentioned to the US manager that maybe an ostensibly-all-ages game with kidnapping, slavery, and brothels would be offensive and horrible in the US market (or any market, but we didn't go that far around our own bosses). And that maybe it would cause them some trouble with the ESRB, since they really wanted a T rating.

This bright light of industry savvy replied that maybe they could rename the brothels "teahouses" in the localization. Maybe he didn't know that the "teahouses" would still be staffed with NPCs describing how they were sold by their parents and abused by their johns.

They got the M rating they so richly deserved, and released something like 18 months behind schedule. The only press they got in America was to be used as a photo in an article decrying the continuing use of "booth babes" at E3.

So hopefully this ad also bespeaks an even more doomed scam of a "game".

Oddly enough, I clicked on this thread, and one of those ads was sitting on the side of the screen.

For a while I was able to click on the x next to them to not see them, but now it's not coming up as an option.

It's annoying, and I'm sure the site is working on dealing with those sorts of ads. They've mentioned before that they have troubles with being able to block them all.

And don't be surprised if you get told you're only seeing it because you're looking up pornography or related material, otherwise you obviously wouldn't get those ads. That's a standard reply people give here when they don't know any better.

It was annoying to me too, but I'm more bothered by the "male only" tag then the actual image on the ad. I hate things that objectify women, but I hate things that exclude us even more.

I turned on ad block on my bgg account, so I don't have to see obnoxious ads like that anywhere.

Look on the bright side. The game is for "males only" and yet all their adds feature scantily clad women. That can really only mean one thing: guys that get pleasure from having women characters. You could stoop that low but you're not. Why? Because you are looking at board games, a much cooler and wholesome activity.

IF it's the game i am thinking of, they have already been censured by the people who rate games as they were claiming an a-o rating for awhile. The game was actually not yet rated, and they were trying to make it seem elict and sexy.

I have not clicked on the add that is up currently, but it used to be for a game called wartune. A web search for new stories about "wartune ad controversy" should get info on it.

In the end, it's just a generic mmo that has decided this is an appropriate way to get attention. I could not explain why.

I find them a pathetic attempt at luring in gamers into a crappy game. I'm looking up board games here. If I wanted people to think I was looking up porn, I'd look up porn. They make BGG look cheap and I wish they'd figure out a way to get rid of them.

I tried to find something risqué on YouTube but could not. It looks like a terrible game. This is obviously a lame gimmick to try to make the game seem more interesting to teenage boys. Sadly, they are offending and alienating plenty of people both male and female who might have tried the game otherwise.

I also wish I could get rid of the ads.

P.S. Just to clarify, I was not looking for naked women! (well, I was, but not for that reason. Let's just say I'm not interested...)

Step 1: Titillating ad with "Men Only" stamped on it
Step 2: Drive target demo to your product
Step 3: Offend and incense the non-demo to the point where controversy is created - capture demo stragglers missed in step 2
Step 4: Profit

For awhile I was getting that ad (or one like it) constantly. I actually went in and activated my ad block because of it. Which is really too bad for BGG because I have been known to click through the BGG ads when they were something interesting. Oh well.

Btw I forgot to mention this. This game got flagged a while back by the ESRB, for putting the Adults Only rating stamp on one of its adds. The company that owns the game never submitted it to the ESRB.

For anyone curious the game play is: you click a spot on the world map, your scantily clad sorceress moves to that spot and iniciates a battle. The game look like it auto battles it's way through the fight, by the recorder saying "I'm not even pressing anything", and then it goes back to the map. Rinse repeat.

I haven't seen it.

Adverts to do with things other than boardgames 99.9% of the time come from Google Adsense. These are not reviewed by BGG prior to being accessible to users and BGG has no way of viewing them. They are based on a content form filled in by BGG - saying what the site will and won't accept. Nowhere on the forum did BGG ask for sexist/provocative/offensive ads - chances are that a lot of this content is being slipped in under google's nose.

If you see content like this that you don't think is appropriate - get the adverts url (right click on the advert and 'copy link' etc) and ideally a picture - then send Chad a GM. With this information Chad can block the adverts and report them to Google Adsence. (I've done this a few times in the past).

However, dodgy advertisers often relaunch their advertisements using a new url, when a number of sites have blocked them. Meaning Chad needs to get the new url address to block them again.

Finally, I think you can set your google Adsence preferences to better control the adverts you get. I've done this in the past and now get a 'hide this advert' button on all but the biggest companies. (Sadly I can't remember how I did this - it didn't involve any accounts of downloads. If anyone knows how please add a link - possibly this).

Example of the reject button:
