I'm getting ready to ship a care package to a friend who is at McMurdo Station in Antarctica and I'm looking for recommendations on a board game or two to include. The only intel I have is:
- Settlers of Catan was a big hit in the past
- they have a variable number of players from 2-8
- they prefer games that are 30 min to 2 hours long. Because of the shift work they can't really get together for epic gaming sessions.
I'm also looking for games that are packaged with the least amount of wasted space (for instance, I ruled 7 Wonders out because of this). Wasting anything is a big deal down there ... even shipping with packing peanuts is a big no-no.
So what games should I send down for play on the Ice?

You might want to re-package the games. For example 7 Wonders actually packs down pretty well.

Probably card games in general would be easiest to get to the table. Go with Tichu. One box is two packs, enough for all 8 to play. They'll get tons of replay out of it.

The Resistance: Avalon or Saboteur. Two very small, light games that play 10 and 8 people respectively.

Hi, my suggestions are:

Citadels
The Great Dalmuti

Both games are very funny, and could be "reduced" in a very tight space.

Have a nice trip to Antarctica and, if you have an Internet connection, please visit my BGG profile since I'm a flag counter collector ninja

Eclipse has very little wasted space... whistle

I recommend (roughly in that order):
Bohnanza (3-10)
The Resistance / Avalon (5-10)
Hanabi (2-5)
Wizard (3-6)
The Great Dalmuti (4-8)
6 nimmt! (2-10)

These are all small card games that come in a deck box or very small box and waste very little space, yet are great, light games.

I personally have yet to play Tichu but from what I've heard/read the best variant requires exactly 4 players. It is a very popular game though...

You've got a lot more games in your collection (130+) that I have. Surely you can pick a few 'next steps up' from Settlers and stuff into a jiffy bag or two with the rules wrapped tightly round. Give them a mix of lengths / mechanics from the classics: Battle Line, For Sale, San Juan, Race for the Galaxy (take all from box, leave out tokens and put an elastic band round cards etc).

What about a huge stack of icehouse pieces? The amount of games they can play with those pieces is tremendous and they don't take up a lot of space either.

If they already have a chess set at the station, send him/her the rules for arimaa on a piece of paper.

The resistance, by the way, is an awesome game as long as everyone around the table is a belligerent, scheming, devious, loud-mouthed bugger

Thanks for all of the great suggestions!

I am leaning towards:
Hanabi
Bohnanza
Citadels
The Resistance

I might include Story War just because I have an extra copy.

Breaking down 7 Wonders and packing it efficiently is also an intriguing possibility.

Space Alert! If you're a Tetris master, you can definitely add a small bottle of Johnny Walker in the game box as well.

Smash Up and both expansions is 2-4 players. Can probably do two games at once or maybe figure out a 5-6 player version if they get faster. With card sleeves, all three can fit in the two smaller expansion boxes.

Pandemic base game and the On The Brink expansion fits in one game box.

If he and his colleagues have a lot of downtime and no where to go, then Twilight Imperium.

You're pretty much making the right choices. You should also consider Shadow Hunters.
And yes, repackage 7W and send it. Include the expansions too, of course.
