All,

I have had this game for about a year now and have exactly one play (pbem). Anyone interested in playing?

Thanks,

Barry

Re: want to play?
I'd like to play by forum or by email. But it would be better if we were al least 4 or 5 players.

It would be my first play by vassal/PBF and my first Steam game. So, If you don't want a newbie, no problem. blush

No problem at all. I think the 'basic' game runs faster in a PBF format because it requires less interaction (no auction/bidding for action tile selection excluding the 1st round). Although I'd be interested in trying a Standard game as well, sometime (my gaming group isn't thrilled about it).

Great!

It's not a problem for me to play basic or standard game. But I'll need information about vassal, p.e. what I need to install (version, ....)

It's been some time since playing -- would love to join, but Base only (much easier for this format). Even better would be to play an expansion map, but I'd be fine with the original map as well.

Just curious... How do you play via Vassal? I only found a mod for Age of Steam, but not for Steam...

There is a secret Yahoo group for Steam Vassal players, with all the vmod files you might need.

Re: want to play?
If there's a little help to get me set up on Vassal for this (I have it installed, but never used in anger), I would love to play Steam. Standard would be good. Advanced is fun too, but auction would slow things down, I fear.

"Standard" = turn order auction (or 'advanced' as the term you are using), while "Basic" = no turn order auction (except for the very start of the game).

I'd be happy to help walk you through Vassal; it is pretty easy for a game like Steam. Also everyone who will be editing the maps probably ought to get a DropBox account set up. Using Vassal isn't strictly required, as a PBF game can just as easily be played strictly through the forum while one (or maybe a few) players volunteer to update maps regularly.

If you are looking for a sixth I would be interested. It would be my first PBF of any game, but if you'll have me i'm interested.

Wow, nice to see lots of interest this time around. Took a while to get to five players when we played last, Jonathan. I'll be following along since there are plenty of players! Good luck to all.

Have just put in a membership request on the Yahoo Steam Vassal Group so I can keep track of the game without having to get my copy out.

Re: want to play?
Here is what I propose:

Six-player Steam 1830's Pennsylvania using Ted Alspach's ruleset modification for Steam as linked to the file page here:

1830's PA/Northern California rules for STEAM

How is this different from the Base Steam?

Ted Alspach's Rules wrote:
Setup
Separate all the black cubes from the other colors.
Place 1 gray cube on each of the gray towns (located in or west of the Appalachian Mountains) as
well as Erie and Pittsburgh. Place the remaining 4 gray cubes to the side (do not mix them with the
rest of the cubes). Place 3 random cubes (not gray) on each of the cities (including Pittsburgh and
Erie). Fill the Goods Supply spaces with non-gray cubes.
Urbanization action
If urbanizing a town into a gray city, only one section of track may be built on that turn. Gray towns
may not be urbanized into gray cities. When urbanizing a gray town, a gray cube still on that town is
placed in the newly urbanized city, and one additional gray cube (from the pile set aside initially) is
added to that city as well as the cubes from a Goods Supply space.
Building track
Mountain hexes cost +$3.
Gray Cubes
Gray goods (coal) delivery allows for one of two possible bonuses (but not both in the same delivery):
A gray cube may be delivered a distance up to twice the current player’s locomotive (so a
player with a “2” locomotive could deliver a gray cube up to 4 links, taking up to 4 income or
victory points for that delivery).
Or A gray cube delivery doubles the income or victory points

And a map for your viewing pleasure:

Re: want to play?
After we decide on a map (if the group is agreeable with the one above or not), I will seed the board with the appropriate # of cubes (on colored cities and supply areas), we next choose colors, and roll a 1d100 to set the initial bid order for 1st turn order.

If you plan on helping me to update the maps using Vassal, please send me a GM and I will share a folder via DropBox.

Hi Barry,

Are you referring to installing Vassal, or joining the Yahoo! group, or using the 1830's Pennsylvania map? None of these things are necessary. I suggested Pennsylvania in the absence of other map proposals, and Snoozefest's interest in playing a different map made this an obvious choice, but we could just as easily do the NE US or Ruhr Valley maps as well. Do you have a preference?
