Here's some resources I recommend for additional reading:

* Blood and Thunder: an Epic of the American West. If there's one book to read, this is the one you'd want to read. Much of the book is about Kit Carson, but it is also the story of the Navajo. Ultimately the stories of the Diné and Carson converge. Also available on audio book (I have the Audible audio book as well). http://www.amazon.com/Blood-and-Thunder-ebook/dp/B000W969O0/...

* Navajo History to 1846: the Land and the People. This one's out of print (I have access to a fantastic library; but if you can find this, it is outstanding and very readable.) http://www.amazon.com/Navajo-History-1846-Land-People/dp/B00...

* Kit Carson & the Indians. Was Kit Carson really an American Hero, or a brutal murderer? You decide... http://www.amazon.com/Kit-Carson-Indians-Thomas-Dunlay/dp/08...

* The Book of the Navajo. One volume will introduce you to the people, culture, and history of the Navajo. A primary source for the game. http://www.amazon.com/Book-Navajo-Raymond-Friday-Locke/dp/08...

* Navajo Wars: Military Campaigns, Slave Raids, and Reprisals. I borrowed the title for the game. Not easy reading. But comprehensive. For the serious student. http://www.amazon.com/Navajo-Wars-Military-Campaigns-Reprisa...

* A Journal of the Santa Fe Expedition under Colonel Doniphan. Easily the most fascinating reading of the entire research project (for me anyways). It contains a first-hand account of the first encounter between Americans and the Navajo. http://www.amazon.com/Journal-Santa-Expedition-Colonel-Donip...

* The Kit Carson Campaign, the Last Great Navajo War. Just want to read about the final Navajo War as conducted by Kit Carson? This is the one you want to read. Very good resource. Very readable. http://www.amazon.com/Kit-Carson-Campaign-Great-Navajo/dp/08...

Thank you very much for recommending Blood and Thunder. Also, thank you for the game which is not only one of my top games but the inspiration to learn more about a place I grew up near.

I'm mostly done with the book and I love it. It has given me a much greater appreciation for many things I was ignorant of before. This is one of the reasons I play wargames.

I try to keep track of the games I play and the books they inspired me to read here.

Finished listening to "Blood and Thunder" from Audible.com. What a great book and history. This was a real eye opener for me who was born and has lived my life in the Midwest. So glad Joel pointed this book out in the Designer Notes of the game. Since I finished the book I've now started to play my first game (the walk through game). I've played it up to the first Raid(11) and am loving it. I had no idea on how we (the Navajo) were going to survive this massive Raid. Can wait to continue on. Thanks Joel!
