I decided a while back to build a map room in my house, where I can hang lots of really cool maps on the wall. I have a list of possibilities, but before I commit to the first 7-8 maps, I want to see if anybody out there has any cool ideas that aren't already under consideration. At least a couple of these I saw for the first time on BGG.

So far, under consideration, I have:

*US states redrawn to have equal population,
*US map of true names,
*XKCD map of the internet,
*Ethnicity Map of the US,
*World map with the South pole at the top and the North pole at the bottom,
*Equal area projection map (Hobo-Dyer),
*Middle Earth political map,
*US map of different names for soft drinks,
*XKCD World map according to Americans who turned out to be pretty good at geography

I wasn't able to find a good map of Eve Online that was available in print form, but that might be cool.

Help me chit chat, you're my only hope... to... you know... come up with even more ideas than I currently have!

Rules:

1) It must be cool
2) It may be geeky
3) It doesn't have to be a map of something that actually exists in real life.
4) It must be available in print form at a reasonable price.

I strongly urge you to get a raised relief map. I bought one for TomA two years ago and it's his favorite thing.

Here's one site that has them, but I don't know if it's the best site to get them. http://www.raised-relief-maps.com/index.mgi

Anyway, aren't they cool?

I should add that there has to be at least a significant chance that I can find it in print form at a reasonable price. I love the Dymaxion map, BTW. I bet that one is available somewhere.

As you've moved to Washington, if you make your way up to Seattle, be sure to visit Metsker Maps. They have some interesting odd maps.

My other suggestion would be to check out the prints from Information is Beautiful. Not maps per se, but given your listing of the XKCD maps, I'll bet you might find them interesting.

I'd assume "fictional" maps would be more engaging than a 'real' map (even distorted via infographic notes - 'real' maps people will have SOME grounding to, so take one look and move on...usually*). I'd generally pick things likely to strike up a conversation based on mutual interest with someone visiting.

So maybe things like:
- Map of Skyrim?
- Map of Middle Earth would be a good choice
- Star Wars galaxy map?
- Star Trek galaxy map?

* There are some exceptions, in the maps of things people may not be aware of. Colonial US-period survey maps of the country can be...very...interesting. Lincoln's "Slave Map" of the US in 1860 is another interesting example.

Sounds like you need a copy of Charles Joseph Minard's graph/map of Napoleon's march on Moscow 1812-13! It shows the path of the army, when part of the army split away, a representation of number of troops on the march both to and from, and dates along with temperatures.

You can purchase a copy here, both in the original French and also the English translation.

For Middle Earth, everybody has seen the various flavors of the standard ones from the books. I was thinking something a bit more interesting, such as:

If you can track down the Middle Earth Roleplaying Map bundle from ICE, or somehow come across all of sourcebooks individually, then you could create a very large (it'll cover a good portion of a wall) map of Middle Earth with an amazing amount of detail.

Further to this, you can also buy a pretty good map of the discworld itself: http://www.amazon.co.uk/The-Discworld-Mapp-Terry-Pratchett/d...

On my wall is a massive poster map of Azeroth from World of Warcraft, but it appears that Brady Games don't sell it anymore.
