I would suggest using the "Risk scale" for the miniatures (a bit smaller than 1/72) for 6x reasons:

1- Smaller miniatures means more room to manoeuver around planets.

2- More miniatures could fit inside the box (2x or 3x for the price of 1x) Imagine 20 or 30 instead of 10!

3- Proxies could be used for variants or diversity:

Terrans: Green soldiers from Risk 2210 or Risk Legacy
Changelings: Purple units from Risk Legacy or Risk Transformers
Guardians: Yellow units from Risk starcraft or Risk clone wars
Cyborgs: Red units from Risk starcraft or Risk Legacy
Templars: Blue units from Risk starcraft or Risk Legacy
Insectoids: Brown units from Risk Starcraft
Wraiths: Painted Purple units to black from Risk Starcraft
Neomorphs:Orange units from Risk Starcraft or Risk Legacy

Militia units: Risk Legacy Yellow units (painted in another color).

4- 1/72 Sci-fi plastic miniatures are non-existant. I tried to find some...

5- Other Risk style miniatures could be used: Risk Metal gear...

6- Most of the factions have 2x types of units...

Need any more convincing?

Lastly The non-existant 1/72 miniatures (very few, and old style sci-fi. It's not funny):

I would actually prefer the troop minis to show multiple individuals on each mini. I'm assuming the idea is that troops wouldn't be representative of a single military unit (aka a lone gunman, etc.) but rather it would represent a squad, platoon, army, etc. So a mini with a group of troops would look great and would fit with the theme of massive fleets/armies across the gameboard.

So I was thinking more along the lines of the troops looking something like this (within the bounds of being molded, plastic minis, of course.)

CLICK THE PICS FOR LARGER IMAGES:

(FYI, in this one, I'm obviously referring to the minis in front of the mechs.)

Hope this helps!!

There is no idea as to the size of unit, however, they should be less than Dreaghnouts.

This is fine idea but in this way units will be smaller I think about making multiple inwidual in each race troops.

Here are some of my ideas on the appearance of units:

Guardians:
System know as Infinity

or
Warhammer 40 000

Cyborgs:
System know as Infinity

or System know as Neuroshima Tactics

Templars:
System know as Infinity

Insectoids:
System know as Hordes

Terrans:
System know as Neuroshima Tactics

or Infinity

Neomorpfs
Warhammer 40 000

About rest I don't have a clue but I think about it
