Hello,

I'm looking for an open-terrain wargame played with 'tile'-type pieces (similar to Frontiers or the upcoming Warhammer: Diskwars), with either a sci-fi or historical theme, but please no fantasy recommendations.

I'm thinking something along the lines of Lost Battles, but attainable! LB isn't technically open-terrain, but even games played on terrain tiles will do.

I would love the have the feel of maneuvering troops across a table; essentially, I'm looking for a miniatures game without miniatures.

Thanks!

Devil Pig Games who put Frontiers out have Heroes of Normandie coming out soon. It looks pretty good, very Hollywood WWII movie like. I don't know if Commands and Colors would be up your alley. It has a board with terrain tiles and blocks for troops but no hidden information. Quick and fun.

Ancient Battles Deluxe Expansion Kit 5: Design Your Own. You need to invest in the base game, too, but it's more than worth it. Expansions let you recreate any battle, practically anywhere, from the Bronze Age up to the Age of Gunpowder.

Hold the Line. American Revolutionary War era. Expanded by Hold the Line: French and Indian War Expansion Set and Hold the Line: Frederick's War. Really fun and an excellent intro for new wargamers.

Check out Tide of Iron and its expansions. I've found it to be a very good game.

Tide of Iron

Another, but not cheap, possibility: Battles of Napoleon: The Lion and the Eagle. A very definite miniatures feel.

Battles of Napoleon: The Eagle and the Lion

Both of these have more complexity that Memoire 44.

Edit - these do use figurines to represent the units, so I'm not sure if this fits your criteria.
