Poll: The 257th TGIF Poll
So GAMES Magazine has announced its "2014 Game of the Year" award winner (it's Garden Dice if you haven't heard) and they're gearing up to release their annual GAMES 100 issue soon. So while we wait, let's look back at last year's 100...

(Note: I didn't include the category of Puzzles, since they are not on BGG.)
First of all, have you ever bought/read GAMES Magazine?

Have you played/enjoyed the 2013 Game of the Year?

(Note: For the rest of the questions on this Poll if you have never heard of the game, just skip it. Although you might be able to determine your desire to play it just based on the title. I simply didn't want to take up space with another column for "Never Heard of It".)

Seems like I have played so few of these that there is little point in me doing the polls.

Either King of Tokyo or Hawaii - I'm not sure which. Trajan is close.

Wow, so many games I haven't really heard of.

My favorite of the bunch is Kingdom Builder with Trajan in second. I had played a handful of others listed. I am fairly certain I played more games from that same year but they aren't listed.

Oof, I haven't played very many of these and I haven't even heard of several of them. This does remind me that I need to give Village a try one of these days. Someone in our gaming group has this, but I've been fairly indifferent towards trying it. Of course, they haven't been trying to get anyone to play it, either.

It's Trajan. It says so clearly in the poll. It also says just skip the questions if you've not heard of things.

I'm willing to try almost anything once, so nearly all my answers were "Would try, but not seeking out."

As for my favorite, it's really close between King of Tokyo, Trajan, and Montage. All really good games.

As Kingdom Builder is my favourite game, its easy to name it favourite game from the list.

I could have done with another choice for most of the questions, never heard of it.

d10-1 - I used to be a subscriber. Now I just buy it occasionally because I usually know about games already, so the games section is not as interesting as it used to be.

d10-2 - Don't really have any interest in Trajan. In fact if it was offered I think I'd pass.

d10-3 - Never played any Abstracts on the list. I've heard of Mirror Mirror which I would try, and Repello which I have no interest in.

d10-4 - Never played any of the Advanced Strategy games and don't have any interest to try the ones that I know about. However there were a few I marked I would play if asked.

d10-5 - I've played Grimoire, and I'm kind of indifferent towards it. The rest of the Card Games are a mystery to me except for Mahjong and Decktet which I don't care about at all.

d10-6 - I've played 4 of the Family Games and like them all: Kingdom Builder, King of Tokyo, BITS, and Take It or Leave It. I also have strong interest in trying a few others (odd to see Yggdrasil in this list.) Obviously this is my category.

d10-7 - I played Toc Toc Woodman, and I'm kind of indifferent towards it. I do have interest in most of the rest because I love party games.

d10-8 - I played City Tycoon and HATED it. Never played any of the other Strategy Games and, while I would willingly play several of them, I'm not seeking any of them out.

d10-9 - Never heard of them, no interest in them. I don't like word games.

d10-1d10-0 - Since I've only played 7 it's slim pickings here. My favorite of the bunch is probably BITS.

A ton of games there that I've never heard of. I'm willing to try any of them, but I've only played about 4 of them. Of those, Hawaii is definitely my favorite.

Ora et Labora is my favourite of the games I've played above.

I love almost all games, play Boardgames with my wife, have three kids, generally enjoy cats and understand and like those bumper stickers with the little fishies sprouting legs.

I don't get into games magazines since I have BGG! It looks like this one picked some good winners so that's nice. Like others I had an awful lot of Not Seeking but Would Try votes on the various lists.

10. I really like Village. Folks that enjoy multiple paths to victory and like some theme in their cube pusher should like this one. Its replaced Stone Age as my middleweight Euro of choice and if the expansion is as good as I hope (I have it... just haven't played with it yet...) it might make it to my personal top 10.

Test of Fire: Bull Run 1861

I think this is a really good gateway wargame. Its mechanics make me think of War of the Ring: roll a bunch of dice and then allocate those actions to units.

I tend to pick up the occasional issue of Games, though not as often as I used to. I remember snagging the Games 100 issue on the news stand each year and circling games that I had not heard of before. I even called a couple of publishers based on write ups only to discover that, with the lead time on the magazine, the game was not yet available (or, in a couple of cases, was never going to be available). As others have pointed out, other than possibly spotting a game that I haven't heard of (increasingly rare), the magazine is a lot less useful that it used to be. In fact, I did not even get the Games 100 issue last year - perhaps the first time in at least a couple of decades - and I am not sure that I will pick up this year's issue.

General comment on the games that Games Magazine tends to highlight in the Games 100: There has always been a mix of the interesting and obscure in the lists. Sometimes the obscure titles are deservedly obscure (at least for my tastes), while there are times when it has shed light on a gem that has escaped notice in the past. The tastes of the reviewers tend to be a bit out of step with the tastes of the average BGG member (if there is such a person), but they're a lot closer than they were ten years ago.

Specific comment: I'm baffled as to how Mah Jongg can be considered a new game. Even if the 1850 invention date is doubtful (it is), it has certainly been around since the 1920s.

Of the games that they had in the Games 100 for last year, Mah Jongg (an old family favorite), Lords of Waterdeep, King of Tokyo and Last Will would be the stand-outs for me.

I've hardly heard of any of these, and played very few. The only two I own are Lords of Waterdeep and King of Tokyo - my favourite would probably be the second of these.

Growing up I got a few issues of Games magazine, I should make an effort to check out a current issue.

I have to say I'm very impressed with the diversity and quality of the games they award/nominate. Of the games listed above, there are many that are among my favorite games:

Trajan
Village
Belfort
Quebec
Kingdom Builder
The Road to Canterbury

and more that I consider "great games" that I'd be happy to play anytime:

Takenoko
King of Tokyo
Poseidon's Kingdom
K2
