Irrigation is all but scripted in the first turn (So that you can harvest two food). Famines also come up way too often for it to be ignored. Epidemic and Droughts aren't nearly as frequent, but I find, especially in 4p games, that sanitation should be bought sooner or later. The extra settler you can gain from it can be huge for expansion.

In other words, plan for the disasters. Make sure your advances are combo'd in such a way to overcome the big disasters, even if you're not immune like with irrigation/sanitation. For example, Myths allows you to avoid reducing a city's mood, which can also be huge if you use it (and spirituality) well.

Last game I played, I bought Roads and that triggered an event... Plague... which gets worse if you have... Roads.

Ugh. I'm really tempted to play the "resolve events only for their icons" variant next time I bring this to the table.
