To add one detail, I just found a game that looks an awful lot like it:

Astron

But it was not space-oriented, it was "1950s future-age jet piloty" lol.

Is it Wide World?

I ask because it's the only game from 1957, the year I was born, with a BGG ranking. I'll admit it's not a high ranking, but it's a ranking.
