I know, this is BGG. I've also posted this on VGG, but I don't believe they get as much traffic. Plus, a lot of what I'm interested has items with similar themes in the board game area. So I'm hoping there may be board gamers who'll understand and have some suggestions from their own experiences/collections.

I'm looking to pick up some cheap games on Steam that I might enjoy. I try to wade through it all, but I don't like the interface (would rather be able to open in new tabs, instead of flipping back and forth, and taking forever), plus, I know little about the games. So I'm asking for your help. Some games and themes I'm interested in are:

Board game adaptations
Dungeon exploring
Creating and running a dungeon
Warhammer and 40k (I have most, I think)
American Civil War (huge fan)
World War 2 (squad based, overall command, economic-military control)
Medieval and fantasy warfare
Building of medieval and fantasy kingdoms
Majesty 2
Castles & Castles 2
Close Combat
Blood Bowl
Master of Orion
Shadowrun RPG
City of Heros
Stronghold
Covert Action

Things I want to avoid:

Expensive games that need lots of add-ons
First person shooters/sword swingers
Mind numbing sims

I'm perfectly okay with games that are a bit older, as long as they'll run on Vista.

Any suggestions?

(You could ask in VGG instead.)

Not the answer you asked for, but I would start at gog but I guess it is likely you already did that (cheap, no drm, runs in vista, and you said you have no problem with older games).

Not familiar with Steam, so someone else have to help with more helpful answers.

Thanks. I did post in VGG as well, just not expecting as much of a response.

The Blood Bowl game plays pretty much exactly like the tabletop version, but with cool graphics.

As far as medieval warfare, I was really blown away by the Mount and Blade series, which is periodically on sale for around $8 for all of it. It's a medieval FPS type game, with some economics and character progression thrown in. The massive battles are excellent, and well worth the price. There's a lot of support from the publishers, and some really cool mods that change the map, graphics, etc.

Have you tried the Dungeonbowl add-on/game? I only recently saw it (hadn't played Blood Bowl in a while) and not sure how much it adds to it.

Right now I would run out and grab XCOM and Baulders Gate...both are on sale. Baulders Gate is an older D&D game but it's a good game and 5 bucks is a good price.
XCOM has a table top feel in my opinion. I really enjoyed it and its on sale; 75% I think.

For Steam, I would recommend making a wish list for games and wait for an email for them to go on sale...which most games on Steam eventually do.

Cheers

Will Baldur's Gate work well on Vista? I know it's older and some of the older titles have issues with quicker machines. I'm not tech-savvy at all, so don't know how to reduce speeds, etc.

This version does:
http://www.gog.com/game/baldurs_gate_the_original_saga

Good old Games packages games to run on modern computers. I don't know if the same version then ends up on Steam, or if that is the original version, or (if needed) has been fixed by someone else.

this...get XCom : Enemy Unknown while it's on sale. I think you can get it on amazon for 9.99 now? and it just gives you a steam key to redeem. Best game I've played in a long time.

Seconded. I mentioned this in my response over on VGG, but Blood Bowl is definitely worth checking out.

If you're gonna get Baldurs Gate on steam, I'd wait until they have their d&d package on sale and you'll get that plus others for same price I've heard

There are rumors that Hive might be coming to Steam later this year also

If this is a typo for City of Heroes then by all means buy it. The small amount of money it should cost will provide hours of entertainment as you wait for your refund since the game shut down last year.

Yes, it's a typo, I'm human apparently. I used to play it a lot, figured that including it, along with several other games I listed that are no longer in production or available, would help people to know what sort of games I was into.

Thanks all for the suggestions. I'm going to look into some of these and see what pops out. I know I'm almost done with the Space Hulk game (2 missions to go), so I'll be wanting something I can spend a little bit of time a day on.

Um...why not just use Firefox or Chrome to view Steam? You can open as many tabs there and add to cart and click buy when ready. Or is this a Vista thing? (I'm using Win 7)

a few suggestions:
Dungeon of Dreadmore
FTL
The Binding of Issac
Galactic Civilizations II: Ultimate Edition

I can do it now, with the Internet Explorer, just didn't know they had a website that was pretty much the same as the program. Dungeon of Dredmore and Galactic Civilizations sound interesting too.

Convenient timing... we've just announced the release of Hive on Steam!

You can pre-order already (if you do, it's 30% off).

+1 for crusader kings 2

I just picked up Hearts of Iron 3 (ww2) and am enjoying it as well.

Both are made by Paradox and definitely have more a board game strategy feel.
