what are people thinking are the best 2 player games out there right now. I own so many of them it's embarrasing to have to ask but it's like have 500 channels and nothing on, ya know?

cry

I want some great 2 players for my brother who is not a gamer. He likes Jambo, ROMA, Fette Autos (Street Illegal), et al. For multiple player he likes Ticket to Ride, Alhambra, RA. I mention those to give you an idea as to his likes.

What am I missing, homeys?

I'll check it out, Drew. Thanks very much. He's not a serious gamer so some randomness and luck don't bother him.

I thought this was the game that got some pretty bad ratings at Essen a year or two ago? Now I see this one appearing in a lot of posts. Is this one of those games that appears dull at first but then gets better with more playing? Can anyone give me a little more info? Why do you like it? What number of players does it play best with? Is this a lighter game or something heavier?

Has he tried any of the GIPF series? Their great appeal is that they look like "familiar games" like Checkers or Backgammon, and the play is similarly simple, but the strategy is deep.

Der Untergang von Pompeji is my all-time favorite family friendly game to play. I have only played with 3 or 4 (w/husband and 1 or both sons) and we've always had a blast! This is one game that really encourages sound effects while playing.

A recent 2-player favorite is Darter, very similar to RoboRally and Ricochet Robot.

... and Roma, I find the card text very similar to Magic the Gathering CCG.

Attika. That is what you are missing. Gipf series games are great too if he likes abstracts. Go is always an option in the abstract world too.

I also had read at first some not very excited reviews/opinions and would not have thought of buying it. But my gf saw it on sale and bought it. I even told her to think about it since I had not read great things about it.

Well, it hit the table and my opinion completely changed from the start. It's certainly a "light filler" game. Luck is a determining factor but the game still doesn't "play itself". The theme is a big bonus - waiting for your move to make your people flee from the enclosing lava gives it a nice little thrill.
And, it absolutely scales well 2-4 players - although maybe it's best with 2 if I have to give a number.

I'm not a fan of Samurai. We like Lost Cities. He doesn't really like games like M44. But the Settlers Card game may be good...

Thanks.

In random order:

La Città
Puerto Rico
Hansa
San Juan
Babel
Ticket to Ride
Attila
Caylus
Tikal
Ceasar & Cleopatra
Soc: Cardgame
Carcassonne: H&G
Abalone

Attika & Blue Moon got boring quite quick. Right now I like La Città, Hansa & Caylus best.

Non-gamer: Hansa, TtR, Carc, Abalone, C&C, San Juan.

Knizia's "Scarab Lords" and "Minotaur Lords" are some of my favorites. CCG like, but not collectable.

"Lost Cities", "Lord of the Rings: the Confrontation", "Battle Line" and "Hera and Zeus" are all excellent two player games. I'd give "Balloon Cup" pretty high marks. "Caesar and Cleopatra" is reasonably fun as well. I have "Roma", but haven't had a chance to play it yet.

Everytime someone asks that question, I link them to your geeklist about Kosmos 2-player games. So, I'm not much help at all.

Good luck and Happy Gaming!
