I want to swarm, it looks fun. It's just not all that viable right now! I think part of the reason why is that 3 ships rolling 2 dice each is in no way equivalent to one ship rolling 6 dice because the defender only rolls defense dice once in the latter scenario and rolls thrice in the former.

The solution is one that could open up amazing strategic space in the game and also probably increase sales of the smaller ships as people scramble t purchase 3,4, and 5 copies.

Have a captain or upgrade card or some mechanism that allows a group of ships within range 1 of each other to combine and make a group attack against a single target. It would have to be balanced and tweaked of course, and probably would want to focus on allowing that for smaller ships more than larger ones, but it could be awesome!

Barrage of Fire in the OP2 prize allows you to do this to some extent.

Indeed, although it'd be nice if it wasn't a "discard", but maybe something just really hard to re-use.

Which does make me wonder...why is it we pretty much just have 'action' (IE., use every turn), 'disable' (so it takes an action to make it available again - basically 'use every other turn'), or 'discard' weapons?

Why not have something that adds TWO 'disable' tokens to the card, rather than 'discard' it? So it would essentially take two turns worth of actions to re-enable the upgrade.

Another option (just off the top of my head) would be a house rule that every time you roll defense dice in a round, you reduce the total dice rolled by one.

If your ship is attacked for the 3rd time this round, you would roll 2 less dice.

Not a great fix, and clearly there are some issues, but something like this might make swarm attacks more usable.

Four K'tinga class cruisers, rolling four dice each, and points left over for a little bit of upgrading seems a decent swarm option. Heck, I'm even fine with a five Jem'hadar attack ship swarm, even at only three dice each.

But 3 attack dice are unlikely to get through really large defense dice pools, no matter how many times the 3 dice get rolled. It's not that tough to get 7-9 defense dice. Let's take the 9 defense die option: IRW Valdore 2 + cloak 4 + Sulu 2 + Terrell nearby 1 = 9 dice. That's 3.375 evades, not counting Sulu's battlestation -> evade ability (which has a chance of 2.25 battlestations in that same roll). 3 attack dice is only 1.5 hits on average. The Romulans can just evade away even if the 5 Jem'hadar ships attack it every round.

That's the whole basis of the original post. A larger defense die pool is better than a swarm of small attack die ships, at least right now. The only way to really counter large defense die pools is with large attack die pools.

That just screams SFB's multi-turn weapons arming. Plasma torpedoes do a TON of damage but can only fire every 3 turns.

The problem here is, by having 2 Disable tokens instead of just 1, the ship loses 2 additional Actions to rearm that weapon. It'd have to be a very powerful upgrade to require that. Right now Barrage of Fire is the only one that might qualify. Would losing 2 Actions be better than a one shot weapon?

Absolutely. And very thematic for a card that comes with the Bird of Prey, which should be a hit-and-run raider.

Problem is, I suspect that Barrage v2.0 would be far too powerful, even with a two action reload and the power drain.

We might see this with Species 8472's "planet killer":
