If there are two opposing squads in adjoining jungle hexes, sharing a jungle hex side, can they fire at each other, or is melee their only option?

Reread 16.1 LOS Checks which states in part:

If the string touches the physical depiction of a terrain Obstacle or Hindrance in an intervening hex, that LOS is blocked [16.2] or hindered [16.3], respectively

As there is NO intervening hex between adjacent hexes, there is always LOS between adjacent hexes.
