Hi folks,

Whilst waiting for my Season 2 Zombicide figures to arrive I made myself some AH Gate Stands. I was drawn to Walt Winfrey's beautiful stands but being on a tight budget decided to make some of my own using some left over Warhammer bits and some green stuff.

I was too lazy to give them a full-colour paint job and felt the monochrome look worked well enough (and you can't actually see most of the stand when the portal is on it anyway).

Anyway I just thought I'd share for anyone who might be interested:

And here's a Work-in-progress shot where you can see the combination of plastic left-overs and green stuff:

I haven't actually played in ages so am looking forward to trying them out over the weekend.

Happy gaming!

Thanks Jack - and everyone else - for the kind compliments; I'm very flattered.

I'm afraid this is probably the only set I'm likely to make in the near future as I've used up the best "bits" of my bits box, and as I'm not so into Games Workshop figures at the moment I'm not likely to have left-over parts like that for a while..

You could always create a cast of the ones you've made to make more...

Thanks for the suggestion. I've never tried making casts before and wouldn't really know where to start, but I might look into it.

Mark,

Send me a geek-mail if you're interested and I'll provide you the name and contact information to the vendor we used for our 'smalls' casts on our Crafthulhu Kickstarter and continue to use for our sales.

Cheers,
Joe

Re: Home-made Gate Stands
Mark, congrats your stands look great and thank you for sharing.

As for making molds of these to possibly sell, I just think you might need to consider that you have used bits from Warhammer in these, and the company that makes Warhammer is known for its fierce protection of its IP, and I'd hate to hear that you ended up with a Cease and Desist letter over it.

Re: Home-made Gate Stands
Thank you, Mark ~ there's a been a steady 'buzz' for months, and now with us launching the website, it will make ordering the pieces much easier for people as SquareSpace (the company hosting our site) uses Stripe, a system similar to PayPal.

I'll respond to your PM now ~ who knows, maybe we can join forces in the future. If you're interested in running a Kickstarter campaign, let me know. I don't have all of the answers, but I've run one that didn't succeed, and one that wildly succeeded for us. Thank you very much for the complimentary remark about our pieces.

As to Shannon's point, you may want to reach out to them and find out if they plan on doing such a thing or pursue a licensing agreement. I'll share more with you in the PM.

Cheers,
Joe

Re: Home-made Gate Stands
Thanks Shannon and Joe. The issue of copyright had occurred to me and I'm looking into the possibility of sculpting my own elements (such as the tombstones etc.) to avoid the issue altogether. This will probably lead to a slightly simplified design, but also one which might be easier to make casts of. We shall see.

Good for you, Mark ~ there appears to be a small, but committed group who are interested in the pieces. It's a great start!

Re: Home-made Gate Stands
Very nice - good job!

If you're looking at making molds yourself to cast them, feel free to GM me and I'll be happy to give some pointers/suggestions on products to use - I make gate/monster stands as well that I sell on Etsy. I can tell you that due to all the small pieces/bendy bits, bubbles are going to be an issue if you don't use pressure molding or at least a degasser. You'd definitely want to use a two-part mold at the very least.

But either way, well done!

Those look amazing! Great use of extra Warhammer bitz as well. W40K actually has some very Lovecraftian themes.

Re: Home-made Gate Stands
Thank you all once again for all the helpful compliments and suggestions.

I've given this some thought and think I will continue hand making the stands rather than attempting to mass produce them using moulds and casting. This is partly because I don't feel I presently have the skills or time to master the techniques required to cast them using moulds.

I also don't envisage selling these on a mass scale and would rather turn out a smaller quantity of hand-crafted items that I am completely satisfied with and not have to worry about any loss of detail/bubbles etc. even if the end product will cost more to produce.

To this end I will be experimenting over the next couple of weeks with some alternative (non-Games Workshop) components whilst looking for ways to refine my workflow to keep the required hours of labour down (and thus keep the end price down as far as possible).

As soon as I have the new designs completed I will share them here for your valuable feedback and suggestions.

Thanks again,

Mark.
