Turn #5 (1549-1559)

Initiative Order:

The Initiative Order is now altered due to the death of Charles I and Barbarigo at the end of Turn 4 (1548), as follows:

Turkey : Player #3 (Alberto, Francisco)
England : controlled by Player #3 (Alberto, Francisco)
Portugal : controlled by Player #2 (Luca) *
France : Player #2 (Luca)
Spain : Player #1 (Manuel)
Venice : controlled by Player #1 (Manuel)

* : England plays before Portugal after a a die roll resolved the CP/TP/VP tie.

Cards Phase

Force Pool is updated, La Vallette (General) can now be employed by the Knights of Rhodes (Minors Allied with France), Duke of Alba (General) and Santa Cruz (Admiral) are now available for Spain, Turkey receives Lala Mustafa (General), Kilic Ali (General) and Piyale (Admiral). A new Conquistador is available for France, Villegagon. Finally, three Leaders are available for Minor Nations: Marcantonio Colonna (Admiral) for Papal States (Vassal of France), Sigismong II (General) king of Poland (Vassal of Spain), and the Conquistador Houtman of United Provinces (Minor yet not created).
A new Land Technology is now available: LT#3 Arquebusiers. Cards of Turn 5 are added to the deck and reshuffled with all discards.

Turkey draws 9 cards (8 for the Keys controlled plus 1 card for the Monarch's bonus), then 1 additional card is purchased by paying 1 TP.

England draws 7 cards (6 for the Keys controlled plus 1 card for the Monarch's bonus).

England and Portugal draw 7 cards each (for both Powers: 6 for the Keys controlled plus 1 card for the Monarch's bonus).

France draws 7 cards (for the Keys controlled), then purchases 1 additional card paying 1 TP.

Spain draws 6 cards (for the Keys controlled), no additional card can be purchased.

Venice draws 4 cards (for the Keys controlled), no additional card can be purchased.

Players bid secretly for assigning the control of non-Playing Major Powers. All Player-Controlled Major Powers bid 4 points each, so non-Playing Major Powers are assigned in Initiative Order, resolving ties in Initiative Order as well, as follows:

England to Turkey (bid paid with the 3 CP Card E23 Society of Jesus, no Mandatory Event to play)
Portugal to France (bid paid with 4 VP)
England to Spain (bid paid with the 4 CP Card E61 War with Persia, no Mandatory Event to play)

Actions Phase

Turkey plays the Event Card E80 New Leaders, that allows the Ottomans to deploy two Generals at no CP cost: Kilic Ali in Mosul and Lala Mustafa in Buda. Then a second Event Card is played, E75 Bankers. Turkey so draws two Cards from the deck. Card E75 is then discarded because this is the last Game Turn.

England plays the Mandatory Foreign War Card E30 Revolt of the United Provinces. Rebellions spread in Amsterdam and Antwerp. The small force of Spain garrisoning Antwerp (1 Regular LSP) is destroyed by rebels. The initial forces of Rebels is composed by 6 Rebel LSP and is led by William I of Orange. The Card and all pieces are placed nearby the Power Card of Spain, that will fight the Dutch Rebellion during next Game Impulses.

Portugal plays the Event Card E103 Colonial Dynamism. Portugal will add +1 to all Colonization Attempts till the end of the Turn. Portugal performs an immediate attempt, as per card rules, in Angola. 6 is rolled, modified by +2 for the Exploration Force (1 Mercenary LSP committed from Lisbon) and the Event E103, and by -2 for Natives resistance. So it's a success! France gains 2 VP (2nd Colony founded in South Africa) and Portugal places a Colony Marker in Angola, Colonization Level is unchanged.

French player decides to perform another Colonization Attempt, so trying to ride the fortune of Portugal. A 2nd Card is played, worth of 3 CP, E34 Muscovy rushes to the East. The Mandatory Event is played immediately, the Capital Area of Astrakhan is conquered by the Russians, that so annex Minor Nation Astrakhan. Card E34 is removed from play. Then the 3 CP are used to perform a Colonization Attempt in Mozambique, with the same die roll modifiers applied in Angola. This time the die roll result is 3, a failure, but not a massacre...

France plays the Event Card E70 Fortunes or Disgraces to increase her Prosperity by 2 levels. Then Card E91 Call of Mercenaries is played as Event: 4 new Mercenary LSP are deployed in Milan. Card E91 requires the exploitation of a Resource, so France designates Fish, that produces 4.5 TP for France and 3 TP for Portugal.

Spain plays the 2 CP Card E10 Cranmer, CP are used to suppress rebellions in Barcelona and Naples.

Venice plays the Event Card E105 Diplomatic Dynamism. Venice will subtract a -1 to CP cost bonus modifier to all
Diplomacy Actions till the end of the Turn. Venice immediately three Diplomacy Actions with the CP value of Card E105 (5): German States are moved from the Alliance box of France to Friendship (cost is 2 -1 for E105), then Germany is moved to the Neutral Area (cost is 1 -1 for E105), finally Knights of Rhodes are moved from the Alliance box of France to Friendship (cost is 2 -1 for E105). So in the end Venice used 2 CP over 5. The two Diplomacy Actions on German States allow Venice to claim the political control of two Imperial Electors: Leipzig and Munich.

>> After a long pause, Alberto Buj has replaced Francisco who had to leave the game due to having a baby.

Turkey plays the Monarch Card R5 Excellent Minister (5 CP). The Excellent Minister is played on Turkey. Then 1 CP is used to redeploy the fleet of Barbarossa from the Tyrrenian Sea to the Western Mediterranean Sea. 2 Pirate NSP of Algeria are left in Tyrrenian Sea, and 1 NSP of Turkey is dropped in Barbary Coast. The remaining 4 CP are used to purchase a Technological Advance, so the Ottomans can now adopt LT#2 Arquebusiers.

England plays the Event Card E69 Epidemics. Plague hits Paris and then spreads to Reims and Orleans.

Portugal plays the Monarch Card R3 Dynastic Crisis (1 CP) against Spain. The CP is then used to perform a Diplomacy Action on German States that so enter the Friendship box of France, one Embassy point is so expended.

France now plays the 4 CP Card E22 Dissolution of the Monasteries. 2 CP are used to perform a Diplomacy Action on the Knights of Rhodes, that so enter the Alliance box of France; one Embassy point is used. The Diplomacy Action on German States allow France to remove one Political Control Marker from the Imperial Electors Display, so Venice loses the political allegiance of Munich Imperial Elector. 2 CP are then employed to deploy La Vallette, general of the Knights of Rhodes, in Milan, where he takes the command of the French army in Italia.

Spain plays the Event Card E100 Unrest against France, that so suffers one Prestige level loss. A die is rolled to determine how many Rebellion Checks are to be performed, 6 is the die roll result. All Key Areas controlled by France are designated and a die is rolled for each Area, adding +1 for the Prosperity level of France. In the end Rebellions break out only in Paris and Ravenna.

Venice plays the Mandatory Event Card E9 Council of Trent. Two Conversions Attempts are performed in Munich and Mainz, both are successful, so the Areas are returned to Catholic faith. Then three Diplomacy Actions are performed on German States. The first one costs 1 CP because the Diplomacy Marker of German States exits the Friendship box of France and enters the Neutrals Area, the cost is diminished by 1 point because of the effect of Event E105 Diplomatic Dynamism in play nearby the Power Card of Venice. This Diplomacy Action allows Venice to put back the Political Control Marker on Munich over the Imperial Electors Display. The following two Diplomacy Actions allow Venice to move German States first into the Friendship box of Spain (cost is 1, diminished to 0 for E105) and then into the Alliance box (cost is 2, diminished to 1 for E105). 1 CP remains at the end of Venetian Diplomacy, and is used to flip the Diplomacy Marker of German States to the +1 side, so protecting Germany from enemy diplomatic attacks. These two actions allow Venice to remove two French Political Control Markers from the Imperial Electors Display, so making Wittenberg and Trier become neutral. German States so become a Tutored Minor Nation of Spain (at war with Turkey), all forces of Germany (10 Regular LSP) are deployed in Munich.

England now plays the 3 CP Card E64 Revolt in Ireland. 1 CP is used to deploy Henry VIII in Portsmouth, the remaining 2 CP to recruit 2 Mercenary LSP in the same area. Then England plays a 2nd 3 CP Card E63 Revolt of the Mameluks of Egypt. All CP are used to declare war on France, 1 Embassy point is expended and England suffers one Prosperity Level loss because the war declaration is not supported by any Casus Belli.

Portugal plays the Monarch Card M25 Sebastian I (3 CP). Sebastian I is not crowned king of Portugal because
Manuel I is alive. All CP are used to attempt to colonize Bahia in Brazil. A 1 Regular LSP force is already present there, so Portugal adds +1 for the LSP and +1 for the Colonial Dynamism Event (E103) in play, then subtract -2 for the Natives resistance. Die roll result is 1, that means all Portuguese soldiers are massacred!

France now plays the 2 CP Card E82 Treachery. 1 CP is used to deploy the Conquistador Villegagon in French Colony of Congo. Then 1 CP is used to move the army of La Vallette (4 Mercenary and 1 Regular French LSP) from Milano to Ravenna, where he engages the Persian-Turk army of Kilic Ali. The Ottomans play the Combat Card E94 Surprise Attack, that allows them to roll combat dice before France. So 6 dice are rolled by Turkey (1 for the Combat Value of Kilic Ali, 4 for the Persian LSP and 1 for the technological bonus, but no die roll makes a hit. One hit is inflicted to France for the technological bonus of Turkey (Arquebusiers), one French Mercenary LSP is then removed. France then rolls 6 dice (2 for La Vallette and 4 for the LSP) and inflicts one hit. So France is defeated (no VP/Prosperity gain or loss because no Major Battle took place) and retreats her forces to Milan. Both leaders survive the combat.

Spain plays the 2 CP Card E67 Smallpox, all CP are used to move 2 Regular LSP from Barcelona to Valencia, where a Rebellion is suppressed. Card E67 requires the exploitation of a Resource revenue, so Spain designates Tobacco that produces 4.5 TP.

Venice plays the 2 CP Card E95 Siege Mining. 1 CP is used to activate a 1 NSP force in Famagusta and crush the rebellion there, then 1 CP to move the NSP to the Eastern Mediterranean Sea.

Turkey plays the Mandatory Event Card E73 Inflation (4 CP). 2 CP are used to redeploy the army of Lala Mustafa from Buda to the Adriatic Sea and then to move it to Ravenna. A 3rd CP is then used to besiege Ravenna, 9 dice are rolled for the LSP, 1 for the Leader, 2 because the port is blockaded, 1 for the Technological bonus. One six is rolled, so Ravenna is captured, a 2 LSP Counter of Turkey is flipped to the Garrison side and 1 VP is awarded to Turkey. A die is rolled for the Fortification level of Ravenna, no hit is inflicted to Turkish army. Dice are rolled to check the survival of Kilic Ali is dead during combat, provided the fortress was captured, a couple of 6 is rolled, so the Turkish General is killed!
The last 1 CP is used to move the fleet of Barbarossa to the Gulf of Lyon. Event E73 is then applied, a die is rolled to determine its effects and the result is even, so the Inflation level is downgraded to 0/5. Also, Card E73 requires the exploitation of a Resource, so Turkey designates Oriental Products, that generates a +1.5 TP revenue to Turkey, and +3 TP to Portugal.
A second Card is played, it's the Mandatory Event E8 Defender of the Faith (2 CP). Spain is confirmed as the Defender of the Faith, then the Ottomans expend the CP as follows. The fleet of Barbarossa makes Piracy in Gulf of Lyon (1 CP), so stealing 3.5 TP (2 TP from Marseille, 1 from Barcelona, 0.5 from Cagliari). Then 1 CP is used to redeploy the Turkish NSP from the Barbary Coast to the Atlantic Ocean.

England plays the Mandatory Foreign War Card E26 Decline of Portuguese Empire (3 CP). Event Marker E27 is placed in Lisbon and Tangier becomes a domain of Algeria, the Control Marker E26 is placed accordingly. Portugal so loses one Key Area. Card E26 is placed nearby the Power Card of Portugal and 6 Rebel LSP are placed on top of it as the Initial force of African natives. 2 CP are used to make Piracy in The Channel and the Bay of Biscaye. This allows England to steal the Trade Value of Rouen and Bordeaux, so 2 TP are added to English Treasury. Then 1 CP is used to redeploy the army of Henry VIII to Calais.

Portugal plays two Cards in a row: E79 Interception (2 CP) and E86 Shipyards (2 CP). 2 CP are used to move one Mercenary LSP from Mozambique to Cape, 2 CP to redeploy one Regular LSP from Tangier to Angola. Card E86 requires the exploitation of a Resource, so Portugal designates Slaves that produce +4.5 TP to France and +4.5 TP to Portugal.

France plays the 4 CP Card E77 Minor Campaign as follows: 2 CP to redeploy Villegagon and 2 Mercenary LSP from Congo to Ivory Coast, 1 CP to recruit one Mercenary LSP in Kameroun, 1 CP to redeploy one Regular LSP from Bordeaux to Dijon.

Spain plays the Monarch Card R1 Puppet Monarch (2 CP), the CP are used to move 2 Regular LSP from Valencia to Granada, where a Rebellion is suppressed. The Puppet Monarch is then assigned to France.

Venice plays the 2 CP Card E68 Gout. 1 CP is used to move one NSP from Venice to the Ionian Sea where a Trade Route is immediately established, so expending the 2nd CP. Card E68 requires the exploitation of a Resource, then Venice designates Gold, that produces +5 TP to Spain, +1 TP to France and +1 TP to Portugal. The Initiative of Venice is then exhausted because no more Cards are in Venetian hand.

Turkey plays the 3 CP Card E72 Gold Mine. 1 CP is used immediately to perform a Piracy Action in the Atlantic Ocean, no Trade Value is stolen from Portuguese ports because the Ottoman Empire and Portugal are not at war. Then 1 CP is used to move the army of Lala Mustafa from Ravenna to Milan. France immediately reacts by playing the Card E90 Storms and Thunders. This nullifies the Ottoman attack and makes all CP of Card E72 are lost. France then plays a replacement Card from the Strategy Deck. Turkish impulse is so ended because the Ottoman player decides to play no 2nd Card.

England plays two Cards in a row: E11 Works of Erasmus (2 CP) and the Mandatory Event E1 Death of the Emperor (3 CP). 2 CP are used to redeploy the army of Henry VIII from Calais to the sea of Canada, 2 CP to move the army to Quebec and 1 CP to claim the enemy Colony in Quebec. Thus the Colonization Level of France drops to 2 points, the Colonization Level of England raises to 1 point and 1 VP is awarded to Turkey for the capture of Quebec Colony. Mandatory Event E1 is then activated, Event Marker E1 (currently in German States) is flipped to rear side, thus marking the Holy Roman Emperor is dead and Card E1 is placed nearby the Power Card of England, who will benefit of a +1 bonus vote and will break ties during the Election of the new Emperor. The Initiative of England is then exhausted because no more Cards are in English hand.

Portugal plays the 2 CP Card E99 Wind Gauge / Flanking Manoeuvre. 1 CP is used to redeploy the Trade Fleet of Portugal from the Atlantic Ocean to the Aegean Sea, the Trade Route Marker is so removed. Then 1 CP is used to make a Piracy Action in the Aegean Sea, a Pirate Marker is placed accordingly. The Initiative of Portugal is then exhausted because no more Cards are in Portuguese hand.

France plays the Event Card E101 Rush for Gold. The Event allows France to perform a free Colonization Attempt with a +1 bonus die roll modifier, so the French player designates Villegagon and 2 Mercenary LSP in Ivory Coast as Exploration Force. Target region is Newfoundland in Canada (indeed the purpose of France is to increase her Colonization Level back to 3 points). A die is rolled to determine the outcome of the Colonization Attempt, +1 is added for the Conquistador, +2 for the LSP, +1 for Event E101 and -2 is subtracted for Natives resistance value. The die roll result is 1, then modified to 3, thus meaning a failure. No SP is removed and the Conquistador survives the ambush. Card E101 requires the exploitation of an exotic Resource, so France designates Spices, that produce a +3 TP revenue to Portugal.
France now wishes to play a 2nd Card (2 CP) to redeploy a Regular LSP from Dijon to the Ivory Coast. Indeed the Foreign War Card E26 Decline of the Portuguese Empire is threatening all Colonies in Africa, and Ivory Coast is not garrisoned. But the French player now discovers all seas bordering France are patrolled by enemy fleets, all ports are blockaded! So no force can be redeployed outside France!

Spain plays the Event Card E108 Kingdom of Heaven that makes Spain earns 18 TP, one from each Catholic Area controlled by Spain. Card E108 requires the exploitation of an exotic Resource, so Spain designates Cotton, that produce a +2 TP revenue to Spain. Provided it's the last turn of play, Spain disband many units in Germany, Austria, Italy, Spain, America and Poland. The Initiative of Portugal is then exhausted because no more Cards are in Spanish hand.

Turkey plays the 4 CP Card E106 Initiative. 1 CP is used to redeploy Lala Mustafa and 1 Mercenary LSP from Ravenna to Odessa, where 4 Crimean Regular LSP are added to the force of Lala Mustafa. Then the Ottoman General redeploys back to Ravenna. 1 CP is then used to attack Milan, with an army composed by 2 Walacchian and 4 Crimeans, plus Lala Mustafa. A combat takes place, Turkey rolls 8 dice (1 for the Leader, 6 for the LSP and 1 for the technological bonus) and scores 2 hits to France (1 for one 6 die roll result only and 1 for the technological bonus). France rolls 6 dice (2 for the Leader's Combat Value and 4 for the LSP) and scores no hit. 2 Mercenary LSP of France are so killed and La Vallette retreats to Florence. Both Leaders survive the combat. Remaining CP (2) are used to recruit 2 Turkish Mercenary LSP in Ravenna.

The military campaign of Lala Mustafa through Italy and Balkans to attack Milan.

A second Card is then played: M8 Charlex IX (3 CP). Lala Mustafa and 2 Walacchian LSP are redeployed to
Ravenna, 3 Mercenary LSP are so stacked under the command of Lala Mustafa who then immediately moves to Milan, 2 CP are so expended. Last CP is used to besiege Milan, 11 dice are rolled by the Ottomans (9 for the LSP, 1 for Lala Mustafa and 1 for the technological bonus). The city surrenders to the Ottomans after two hits are inflicted to the French Garrison. 1 VP is awarded to Turkey and the Keys Marker is moved to the 11+ box of the Key Track of Turkey's Power Card. Lala Mustafa survives the siege outcome.

France plays the 2 CP Card E84 Fortification Effort. 1 CP is used to redeploy the army of La Vallette from Florence to Ancona. 4 Regulars of Italian States are left in Florence to garrison the capital, 4 Regulars of Papacy are picked up during the redeployment move and stacked under the command of La Vallette. 1 CP is then used to attack Ravenna. Turkish forces retreat inside the fortress, so a siege is started in Ravenna.

Turkey plays the 5 CP Card E107 Deus Vult. Lala Mustafa attacks the French forces of La Vallette besieging Ravenna, his army is composed by 4 Crimean and 2 Walacchian Regulars. A Major Battle so takes place in Ravenna because both Leaders are at full strength. Also, the Turkish troops that took refuge inside the fortress sortie out and join the army of Lala Mustafa. Therefore the Ottomans roll 12 dice (1 for the Combat Value of Lala Mustafa, 10 for the LSP and 1 for the technological bonus), 5 hits are scored (one by technological bonus). Then France rolls 10 dice (2 for La Vallette and 8 for the LSP under his command), only one his is inflicted to the Ottomans. So France looses the battle, 2 VP are awarded to Turkey, that gains one Prosperity level. France loses 2 VP and 1 Prosperity level as well. Papal units are removed after the 4 hits scored on France, and 1 Walacchian Regular is sacrificed by Turkey after the 1 hit inflicted by France. Both Leaders pass safely the Survival Tests. A 2nd
CP is then used to prosecute the attacks against the army of La Vallette, Lala Mustafa moves to Ancona and engages the French again. This time 8 dice are rolled by the Turks (1 for Lala Mustafa, 6 for the LSP under his command and 1 for the technological bonus), 2 hits are inflicted to France (1 by the technological bonus). The French Garrison Marker in Ancona is flipped to the 1 LSP side because the town is not fortified, so France rolls 6 dice (2 for La Vallette and 4 for the LSP), no hit is suffered by the Ottomans! France loses the battle and retreats to Rome, two French Mercenary units are killed. La Vallette survives the combat. Lala Mustafa is captured instead! The Ottomans claim Ancona with 1 CP, therefore 1 VP is credited to Turkey and a 1 Regular LSP Counter is flipped to the Garrison side. Remaining 2 CP are used to
redeploy a Turkish NSP from the Aegean Sea to the Black Sea and then to establish there a Trade Route. Ottoman player disband many units in North Africa and Hungary, leaving only forces garrisoning Italian peninsula. The Initiative of Turkey is then exhausted because no more Cards are in Turkish hand.

France plays the 4 CP Card E71 Fortunes or Disgraces. 1 CP is used to move a Regular LSP from Dijon to Paris, where the rebellions is crushed. 1 CP to deploy the Admiral Colonna over the NSP in the Bay of Biscay. The fleet of Colonna is immediately activated and moved to the Atlantic Ocean (1 CP). A first Sea Patrol Check takes place (+1 is added to the dice roll), but it's a failure. So the French player attempts again (last 1 CP is therefore used), but fails again. French player now disbands many units in Italy, France and Rhodes. The Initiative of France is then exhausted because no more Cards are in French hand.

Player's mistake: the second Sea Patrol Check was not allowed by rules. In fact, the French player should move the fleet of Admiral Colonna away the Atlantic Ocean, thus expending the last CP.

Game Rounds played: 7

Interphase

Supply Check - all forces are supplied.

Markers Adjustment Step - Initiative Markers are flipped to the front side (not-Exhaust), the following Leaders die
during the current turn: Coronado, Caboto, Barbarossa, Orellana, Mustafà Ali, Andrea Doria, Roberval.

During the End-Turn Mandatory Events check step, the Revolt of the United Provices outcome is determined into a total victory of Dutch rebels, Spain loses 8 VP and Holland becomes a nation! Then the effects of the Decline of the Portuguese Empire are applied as follows: French Colony in Ivory Coast is abandoned, similarly the Spanish Colony in Canarias and the Portuguese Colony in Gold Coast (this makes the Colonization Level of Portugal raises to 2 points!). Now players check if any End Turn Mandatory Card is inside the Strategy Deck. So Venier (M27) is appointed the new Doge of Venetian Republic.

The election of the Holy Roman Emperor now takes place. Spain controls 5 votes (1 through Austria, 2 though Venice and 2 by German States, Allied with Spain). England (controlled by Turkey) casts 3 votes (1 by Event E1 in play). So Spain wins the election and Austria is appointed HRE.

During the Prosperity Checks, the Prosperity Markers of Venice and Portugal are moved one box to the right (Prosperity Level increased by 1 point) because currently in peace. Prosperity of Turkey, England and France are downgraded by one level because at war, Spain is not modified even if at war because already at lowest level. Then Portugal and Turkey gain 1 Prosperity Level each thanks to the Prosperity bonus provided by the respective monarchs Manuel I and the Enlighted Monarch. Spain suffers a -1 Prosperity penalty for the Dynastic Crisis (R3) in play, but her Prosperity is already at minimum level. No change in Prosperity is determined by rebellions or religion, also in England, where the State Religion is still Catholicism despite the Act of Supremacy is in vigor.

Outcome of Prosperity Checks during the Interphase of Turn 5

During the Rebellion Checks, England and Spain must roll for 4 rebellions, France and Venice for 1 rebellion only. No rebellion breaks out in France. All Rebellion Checks in England generate revolts in Connaught and Dublin, Plymouth and Portsmouth. Similarly all Rebellion Checks in Spain generate revolts in Palermo, San Sebastien, Bilbao and Corunna. One Rebellion Check is performed for Venice, the outcome is a revolt breaks out in Zara.

No Limits Excess Markers are to be removed from the Power Cards. Then players resolve the Resource Price Update step. The marker of Cotton is moved one box on the right. For Sugar, not exploited during the Turn, Portugal counts how many colonies produce that Resource, so the price is set on the box 2. All other markers are not moved. Gold production level is 11 points, this makes the Inflation is increased to level 1/5 (third box).
