Tri-fold Black foam display board.. 48"x 36" granted it doesn't roll up, but it does fold flat. also don't know about its longevity as far as the unfolding and folding goes.. when unfolded the fold seams disappear.. also its dirt cheap, got one at wally world for like 9 bucks.. have seen them on the net for as low as 6 ish.. It is designed to take paint etc.. may even ask if the local print shop can put a design on it, for cheap of course...

get some felt and some spray-glue, and spray-glue the felt to your tri-fold board

Yeah, this is our group's solution. It helps a ton since our tables aren't 36" deep. It is rigid, so it handles the overhand well.

We also started putting mats over them for scenic variety.

As for longevity, they start to warp after enough folks lean too much on them, but really the biggest damage is from carrying them from the car in the rain. They hate getting wet. The paper on one side will shrink and you'll get bowing. I'm sure there is a sealer or something to solve this, but I've just been using something heavy.

I used these when I was running a tournament and didn't have enough boards/mats.

They work well, with the only problem being that they are very light weight and the surface is very slick (to plastic bases). So even a little bump is enough to move every ship on the board. A bigger bump, and game over man!

The best fix we found for this was to use a little sticky tack / blue poster adhesive / reusable adhesive putty - put a little dab under two opposite corners of each base and make sure you press down a little bit after every move... Not a perfect solution, but it got us through the Kessel run tournament (in less than 12 parsecs!)

I have posted on this idea previously (scroll to the middle till you see a rough picture of it), except that this one uses the cardboard display. It's 1/3 the price of the foam board and is less fragile/more forgiving of bends, as it will still lie flat. Cheaper game board means you can put felt on it for the not much more than the price of of the foam board alone.

We used it for a local tournament with excellent results.

These guys make excellent gaming mats:
http://www.deepcutstudio.com/

I've asked them and they made a 3x3 cosmic mat for me.
What can I say - excellent.
I'm already thinking of another 1 or 2 with different planets / stars.
